Hello, appreciate some advice on ND filter. I am using A7. Would like to try taking "smooth flowing water" at beaches or waterfall. I using FE2470 and SEL1018 lens.

Can recommend if better to

1) buy a variable stop ND filter (if so, what the number of stops to buy) or

2) buy a few fixed ND filters (if so, how many different stop to get)

Of course, putting cost aside, if the variable type works, I prefer the variable type.

Thank you.

not an expert here, but others can comment more. my views below.

if cost is not a concern, i think a few fixed NDs are better. Variable ND tends to have more impact on image quality.

It is widely known that variable ND, if u twist and turn to certain angle will have some undersirable effect.

so best 2 get a few NDs, like 4 stops, 6 stops, 10 stops and use them in combination.

I agreed with bro overworked....best to buy separate. I guess most use is 6 stops and 10 stops and cpl. Just my 2 cents.

I use 3 and 10 stops ND filters.

Did consider getting the 6 stops but I figured that stopping down works well for me too.
