Sony A-700 : Experiences compared to...5D, 7D, A100

My humble bird shots today. All hand held (A700 SSS and ISO noise are better than A100 and KM5D) no post processing done except a bit sharpening and add name.
ISO 800 f/8 1/250s

Thanks, 400mm + 1.4X TC.

Since I just use the camera briefly, here is my thought compare to 7D which I have been using for more than 2 years.

Mainly catered towards sharing inputs on areas such as:
- White Balance stability (e.g situational based on Environment)
WB seems to be better control compare to 7D, however, it is still not as accurate as I would like to.

- Auto focus (problems or Improvements)
Auto Focus is one of major improvement over 7D. It is much reliable and accurate as well as faster.

- User Interface - What you like and what you think that could have been better
UI is very nicely done, but I would still prefer the 7D type selection thumbs at the back rather than the joystick version which A-700 has.

- Flash Exposure - Consistencies....
Flash exposure is not yet exhaustively tested, will put in more thought once I have use it more.

- The camera meeting you needs as a photographic tool based on your shooting style.
As far as I am concern, A-700 is a big step up from 7D which will hopefully improve my work.

- How the features offered have helped you get your shots
Mostly AF and higher MP as well as Hi ISO will help me a lot.

Hart

now my turn to give comments. ;)

firstly, the AF speed is super good ! even using a kit lens 18-70mm mounted on A700 body, my subjects don't need to wait a single mili-second for my AF to stablise. The capturing ability is anytime at any situation with great accuracy, u never miss a shot unless your hands arer really clumsy or shaky.

next is the ISO ! good noise reduction, there is hardly any noise at iso1600, i shoot iso3200 without flash at night outdoors and i can even see the BBQ pit downstairs from my flat 6th floor in reasonable clarity.

as for hardware design, the hand grip is wonderful ! very comfortable to hold while u are shooting heavily..

the function buttons such as WB, ISO, +/- EV, drive mode and the usual mode knobs were designed at right places for photographer to access in shortest time frame...

.. to be continued :sweatsm:

believe it or not, after getting A700, i had never use flash for indoor shots since day one, i am like now into " flashless photography".:bsmilie:

The ISO and noise control are so good that i dun need flash and i afford to keep my subjects as natural and original as possible under natural lighting.

Ok, after a few thousands frames...

I can only say 2 words... Great tool.

Still some limitation but I am not complaining.

I am impress with AF accuracy but a little dissapointed with AWB as compare to 7D.

Hart

Same here!!!

After 2 firmware upgrades and thousands of frames (forgot how many - the firmware upgrades reset my frame numbering twice), I can NEVER go back to the 5D.

AF Speed and Accuracy are PERFECT... and the handling speed is unbelievable.

Couple the A700 to the CZ 16-80 .... Phew:bigeyes:

Upzzz for a good cam :bsmilie:

Yah, tried it (again) on the weekend...

Half-press trigger... wait ... zig zig ... dee dee (AF lock) ... Full press ... wait ... cliiiiiiiick claaaaack...

even the shutter sounded soooo tired - Honest! :(

Now letting my 14yr old brother use it sometimes ... he's easier to please :bsmilie:

There is a firmware fix now. But u need to send it in to ssc

Does that mean that firmware updates require a visit to the service center and can't be applied by camera owners?

synapseman, your hanging A700 is likely caused by the Kingston Elite Pro cards... I have similar problems with my 7D... these cards are just too slow IMO... I never had repeat once I went over to Transcend or Sandisk Ultra II...
