Great shots! Just one question -- why is the background so uniform in most of the shots? I would've expected a lot more distracting details in a forest setting. Can the lens really blur out the b/g to that extent?

That's the advantage of a dedicated macro lens.
Especially when you taking a nearly 1:1 shot. Everything at the back will be out of focus. The DOF at 1:1 even at F22 will be very thin.

On the other hand, you can also achieve a very good b/g by looking first before shooting. Make sure the subject is in the open place with no much things behind.
