What software do amateur videographer use for the editing of their videos?
I guese this will be something that one can pick up and learn pretty quickly and do not need to spent a lot of time understanding the software. Soemthing that one can learn and use within a short period of time.

Appreciate your thoughts.......

Any thoughts?

For short learning curve, softwares such as Corel Studio (formerly ulead), Pinnacle, Sony vegas platinum etc are good for making home and decent videos. They cost about <$200. I have used Corel studio 11 and it is very easy and intuitive. Even iMovie and Window Moviemaker can make great decent video. See the thread on video showcase with one video made by imovie recently.
For higher learning curve where the pro used (I am no pro to endorse any), the established names are Adobe Premiere, Avid, Final Cut pro and sony vegas and several others, I think. They are obviously able to offer more features and effects but more more expensive.

I asked the videographer at my friend's wedding and he said he uses Corel videostudio because of the ease of use, and necessary effects are all in. That wedding highlight he did was pretty good. I tried the program it out and its indeed real simple to understand and easy use of effects (Easy to pickup), at the same time u can make ur video look professional(Dats ur main purpose right?). I tried other video editing program b4 but turn out too difficult for me. So thats my opinion.

Hi KohKC,

I'm on a Mac platform and I use iMovie and Final Cut Pro to do all my editing.

iMovie is used when I want to do a quick and simple edit.
It's can be learned pretty quickly and it's quite user-friendly.
Here is a short clip I did using iMovie '11 Trailers feature.

I use Final Cut Pro to do edits and effects that I can get on iMovie like multiple videos playing on screen at once
or when I want to have a better control of the audio.
It takes a bit longer to learn and even longer to master :bsmilie:

There are different types of editing softwares that you can use.

Basically, there are the non-linear editing suites, and hardware editing rig.

The more commonly professional level softwares would be apple final cut studio pro, adobe premiere pro, avid and sony vegas.

Sometimes videos are being edites on these software first and color-graded on a hardware editing rig. That explains why you cannot get those epic color grading effects totally by means of using software editing suites alone.

Could i use IMOVIE on a windows platform? I am using Windows 7. IS there a Windows version of IMOVIE?

iMovie is a Apple only. You can try Adobe Premiere Elements, an inexpensive cousin for the PC

power director, sony vegas, final cut pro

Video production companies use Final Cut Pro on Mac. For windows platform, its usually Adobe Premiere. these two softwares are very flexible due to its ability to do almost anything. if ur doing basic editing, Premiere elements for windows or Imovie for mac is the best bet. both can be found at your friendly neighborhood pirated websites.
