So SMRT wants to be telco now.....

I think they gave up on the trains. They must be like "hey, we have no idea what's going on with our trains, let's just buy a telco and see how it goes. If it flops, let's buy some other stuff, say semiconductors, and see how that goes"

They already branched out into mall management(Kallang Wave Mall) anyway, not sure how that is doing though.

The world will stop if we want our trains to run 100% on time and with no breakdowns before SMRT can think of diversication.

We just have to live with breakdowns and delays or move to Hong Kong where the trains runs almost 100% and pay HK$8 millions for a 2 bedroom apartment. :)

Their train punctuality has been dropping consistently since 2010 and hasn't improved yet (at least based on their 2014 annual report). Maybe it has improved since, but I don't like it when they haven't addressed a problem (not talking about 100%, just improvement) and move on to another thing. It makes me start to wonder if they actually know what they are doing, especially when they start diversifying into businesses that they have no expertise in.

they're not running the thing, just investing in it.
what's the problem with that again?

so they got money to invest... and need to ask for fare increase, how about spending some money to improve on the trains operation, ...the company is serving the pubic or share holders...

The public serves the company, which in turn, serves it's share holders.

I wouldn't be a subscribe of that telco that invested in ... thats for sure.

If SMRT can't make money in its investments it has not enough money to fix the trains. :)

I think that they would because they could - they have the physical infrastructure that spans the island.

You sure the money they make from other investments will go back to the trains?

What is the fuss all about? Look at the share price of SMRT, it rallied when the news broke out. The shareholders are cheering. SMRT share price has not been able to perform since the breakdown saga began some times ago, so in order to have the deadlock broken, they have to look into other businesses or areas.

yeah, they can use the cables to tie up the tracks in future.....

Unfortunately nothing much can be done..

If not happy, can try to arrange a mass boycott - everyone take private transport for one full day - motorcycle, car, bike, walk, scooter, etc.. :)

Those who take part in a mass protest will be arrested.

A group of people walking together will constitute illegal assembly.

See you in the jail. We may form a photography club in the cell. :)

Only a logical step after a lot of fiber optics cables were laid along the train tracks.

I believe steam engine would be a more reliable option.

We have a lot of trees here which can be burnt into charcoal. :)

If they can provide cabs for commuters as alternative means of transportation then why not?....... I guess easier to call them and inform when the MRT breaks down. :)
