what makes you guys stay around with the SLR then DSLR?
money is the factor in SLR or compact as the film and developing the film needs $$$
what makes you choose RF & compact then digital??

As for me i just started photography, so i start from basic..i choose film base and hope to learn more?? what about you guys??

When I started the hobby, it was only film and no digital. I have been a film (still very much in love with it) shooter up to now But recent foray into uw photography is changing that. If I am picking up the hobby today, i will likely go digital for reason that (even me the film guy is seeing) digital is the future. Is there a need to know film to shoot good pics? IMHO, i will say yes on the theory part (and for the sake of doing so to feel holistic). Think abacus, log book, slide rule and now calculator.

dslr.. no need to waste $$ on film and instant results from the lcd. :)

I have been asking this question about 5 years ago and until now, people is still asking this question... I guess I can use this watch example to explain to you. Until now, even if CASIO is making digital watches that has so many functions, water resistance lah, stop-watch lah, alarm lah, back-light , even GPS etc etc... this watch can only be selling like about $100 . People is only willing to pay for high price for the analog watches like ROLEX or SEIKO or Tag Heuer etc, when the prices can reach about few thousands. WHY???

It is eventaully a hobby. People look at things in a matter of what he like and what he prefer , rather than what is more useful.

If you are professional photographer, ofcourse, it is DSLR. no doubt about it , orelse you will not be competitive in your business. But if it is purely a matter of hobby, then every one has his or her personal like and dislike.

sorry but the question is not about Dslr, instead it is asking ppl who uses film or rangfinder or compact, when are you guys using it????what makes you stay with your SLR??

ha ha ha... I am going the other way around... RF -> SLR -> DSLR..

I spend half of my life spending in darkroom when I frist started photography, prints after prints... I must agree that RF ( film ) produces prints that are more "natural" than digital images. Digital images are sharper , color is more saturated and more contrast, which makes the images "too good to be true" sometimes unless well controlled.

Epson R-D1s-the first digital RF that take Leica M lenses:)

i'm taking it that your question is kinda like a film vs digital comparison.

For me..to put it simply - Compare a b&w print with a digital b&w conversion.

Call me a purist.. but no amount of digital manipulation can match the aesthetics and looks of film, especially so for b&w.

I just love both. But since digital will be the future, plus getting tougher to buy films, a choice has to be made one day.

Just like yesterday, took out my rangefinder camera for some warming up since it has not been used for a while. Though looked funny when people around seemed to be wondering why am I still using a film camera  ha! many of them did not know it's Leica.. :bsmilie:
