I intending to keep it as a backup lens.....lookng around for a 18-200mm Nikon VR....

You can, if your aperture is somewhere around f/13 to f/20. But do look out for street lights or other forms of strong light source. The further you close down the aperture, the more pointed/narrow the star is form from those light source mentioned previously due to the aperture settings. Also look out for over-exposed lights which don't make a pic looks good. If you want to avoid that blown out highlights, try not to shoot at a near distance.

Yup. Living near tanah merah. erm.. organise a nite outing for D50 users? can gather the owners. I been shooting mostly nite recently..the weather killing in the day..
