Well, you do have to be a bit lucky. I've taken around 13 different storm captures...only 4 of them are worth keeping.

Quick question, how do you meter for such shots? Do you underexpose the photo on purpose, or simply meter the lights from the buildings?

Well after most trial and errors, I found out that underexposing the shot seems to work best for me. I generally underexpose by one stop, and if that's still to bright, then I underexpose by two stops.
Shutterspeed is usually between 3-10 seconds depending on the frequency of lightning I can observe.

Oh around an hour I guess. And yea, covered shelter. Took this from my room
