Singapore population to hit 6.9million by 2030

.... why not make it 7 million instead?

Reminds me of..

why NTUC or most place sell their item $XX.90. Why not round up to whole figure? Well..its all psychological. Playing around with numbers and your mind. When they say 6.9m.. Most will think ar its not 7 or near yet. Its 6. :bsmilie: ..Aiya..whats new anyway... :) More and more!

Given that the surface area of singapore is currently 710 km². By 2030, each person can still be alloted an area of 102m² to eat, sh!t and take pictures ........

After deducting the airport, military airport, military training areas, container port, golf courses, reservoirs, good class bungalows, etc, what are we really left with?

Well, the future HDB flats will be 60sty high, and private condos 80sty high. And then, double decker MRT, viaduct expressways.

To me, we have already lost our identity long ago.

I don't think we have lost our identity. We're just too busy trying to find it that we forgot about what it's about. Kind of like being so busy looking for your glasses that you forgot you're wearing it. :)

Land leases for some golf courses in S'pore will not be extended
Land leases for some golf courses in S'pore will not be extended
SINGAPORE - Some golf courses in Singapore will have to be phased out when their leases expire and the land put to other uses, the Government said on Thursday.
"There are 18 golf courses in Singapore. They occupy a total of about 1,500 hectares of land. The golf courses in Singapore are generally on a 30-year lease, and the majority of the leases will expire between 2021 and 2030," the Ministry of Law said in a statement.
"Some golf courses would have to be phased out and the land put to other uses. For these golf courses, we would not be able to extend the lease. We are working with the planning agencies over the next few months to provide clarity to the various golf courses on whether or not, their leases can be extended," it said

think those minister will go to BATAM for golf liao, and enjoy some freindly company

"No lah, worst case scenario only lah... Hopefully won't happen..."

Underground Science City to take shape

Underground Science City to take shape - Asiabuilders Singapore

22 July 09 | The Business Times
by Ronnie Lim

(SINGAPORE) The term 'underground economy' has taken on a whole new meaning as Singapore pushes beneath the land surface to house R&D laboratories and data centres: it proposes to set up an Underground Science City (USC) at Kent Ridge.

There are moves afoot to get detailed designs and cost estimates for the project, which spans a 20-hectare geological formation below Science Parks 1, 2 and 3 as well as Kent Ridge Park.

The USC project is also in the vicinity of One-North, National University of Singapore and National University Hospital, where research and development activities are actively pursued.

The push for the USC follows the government's recent green light to start building the billion-dollar Jurong Rock Cavern (JRC) on Jurong Island to store oil and petrochemicals.
JTC Corporation - which called a tender yesterday for a consultant to carry out feasibility studies on the USC - said that the project was needed given the limited land available for new investments at Kent Ridge, following the earlier substantial developments at the three Science Parks.

The USC is part of a wide-ranging, 10-usage underground rock cavern feasibility study called by the government in May last year. Other possible underground uses being looked at by that study include power stations, incineration plants, water reclamation plants, warehouses, wafer fab plants and an airport logistics facility.

This islandwide study - being carried out by the Sintef-Tritech-Multiconsult consortium - is, however, not site or location-specific. It is nearly completed and interim reports from this will be made available to the consultant appointed for the latest USC feasibility study, JTC said.

JTC added that the first studies on the proposed USC project by various bodies and corporations had concluded by 2001 that it was technically feasible to develop an underground cavern at Kent Ridge for R&D facilities.
But with advancements in technologies for cavern construction, JTC said that it was necessary to review the previous findings.

Hence the USC consultant - working within a 14-month timeline - will now reassess the maximum-size cavern complex that can be built, as well as other factors like its impact on the environment and working population at Kent Ridge. It will also have to provide ballpark construction estimates for the USC's three preliminary designs.
Under a second stage of the project, JTC said that it is also preparing to call a tender for soil and rock investigation works at Kent Ridge to prepare for the USC's cavern design. The USC consultant will help provide inputs for this.

When that is completed, the USC project will then proceed to its third phase of detailed concept design, which will include the cavern's layout and design, space distribution for the specified usages, surface and subsurface facilities, and cavern access and circulation.
Here, the consultant will need to provide data like projected user demand, method of excavation and the impact of the cavern construction on existing surface developments. It will also have to consider issues like tremors from earthquakes, and address the psychological effect of working in caverns.

The latest USC study follows JTC's award in April of the main $890 million construction contract for Phase One of the JRC on Jurong Island to Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
Actual building of the underground facility will begin this year-end, with the first two caverns providing 480,000 cubic metres of oil storage when ready in the first half of 2013. The entire Phase One, comprising five caverns, will provide a total 1.47 million cu m of storage when completed by 2014.

This hui ge lookalike diam, diam for the past few months due some sagas but suddenly begin to really work overtime by going around chirping here and there.

By the time he finish gong jiao wei, I'll have pass away in a Johor Bahru Old Folks' Home 'cos I can't afford the S$8.00 coronary artery bypass surgery.

He hero mah... All the other ministers sensed how hostile the ground is to this white paper, all tiam tiam... Our friend saw it as his opportunity to shine and perhaps make a push to be next PM candidate.

On this under ground thing... Imagine... Below us they hollow out the ground for this and that purpose. Above ground, HDB flats need to go to 60 floors to accommodate the population. And some more a lot on reclaimed land. Throw in secondary shaking from Sumatran earthquakes. Sure or not?

isn't he the chap who got a change of heart for something like $5? Cheep cheep ......... :bsmilie:

...... they may also make it compulsory for every citizen to carry a tape to check and make sure you keep within your territorial space .....

last i checked, they want to bring in 6.5 mil already by 2030.
and they cannot cope, and gave a lot of new problems.
now they want to up to 6.9 mil.
odds are... we gonna see a lot more new problems.

i've been trying to figure out how they came to their projection, based on what trends...
and whether did they project how much their policies on increasing birth rates in sg to affect population.
We may already be at 6.9M now ....... anyone been to Chinatown the last couple of days? :bsmilie:
.....they sure are pushing the odds .....

The idea of having many new townships is good. No need to travel out to shop or work BUT school leh?

Didn't they realize traffic is so much lighter during school holidays? While we have schools all over the island, parents like to travel across the island to school their children in a particular branded school. Why don't we have Raffles Primary in every new town? Fast food chain does that, school can also mah. Didn't the MOE says all schools the same standard? It is just the name only lor.

A possible unforeseen problem is the religious, racial and political leanings that these new immigrants bring with them.
Some of these attitudes and beliefs may be extreme. But undetected at the point when Singapore lets them in.
It is a grave mistake to assume that since they are new immigrants, they will surely vote for incumbent that let them in.

........ and we spent time doing NS to protect Singapore against foreign invasion ....... :p

I think the govt should further develop the Marina Bay Sands area. They can construct vast underground complexes and move the vice from Geylang/Orchard Towers/Joo Chiat there. That way MBS will become a fully-stocked, one-stop mega complex for vice. This will free up the space occupied by the houses at Geylang for further redevelopment.
