after you press
the mirror snaps up

and another one is aperture blades adjusting, i expect

like i said, not very sure, but there are usually two motions when you press the button, so when you do mirror lockup it is split up to minimize vibration =)

wow....u do know a lot....

not impossible
especially if his tripod's centre column is extended

today i was shooting ir, trying to shoot fast because hdr, so lazy, never put timer
one of the shots i got was way blurrer than this
anything is possible, depends on how violent you press your shutter release button, etc

i guess more important here, instead of finding out what went wrong
is finding out how to do it right =)

i used the timer...

i am suspecting either the wind too strong (mmm...) or there's ground vibration....anyway lots of people walk past....dunno will affect or not....

Hmm...the pics looked really soft and lack contrast. Like some others have said, you might want to zoom in a bit to eliminate all the black areas.

You can also try to take the photos when the sky is not totally dark....try it around 6.45 to 7.00 pm, while there is still a little light and the sky is turning a very dark shade of blue. You can get very lovely purplish and deep blue skies. It makes the image more interesting.

good tip. but i was waiting for wife to end work so i just snapped away...

The photos look soft could be due to your setup was not stable.
i was wondering too :dunno:
When shooting long exposure or night photography, try to use shutter release cable or timer mode.
i used the timer..
As for what aperture to use, you can try bracketing from f8 to f22.

good tip. not sure if my dslr can bracket between f8 to f22.....seems to be 1/3 stop onli...

When i load the thread, I thought those where from a mobile phone.

Don't use Aperture Priority. use Manual instead, set aperture between F8 to F11. Exposure would depend on the brigtness of the subjet. Self timer set at least 5sec.

so paiseh... :embrass: i guess my camera is a glorified mega-expensive handphone.....hehe

ok, i will try manual, opening the aperture a bit. but my timer onli 2 sec or 5 sec

hi guys....

read in a mag today that for 1.6x DSLR, going smaller than F11 (i think) will make the picture subject to diffraction, thus the images will be soft. Do you think this is possible in my case?? :dunno::dunno:

no, at such small size
will not be that obvious

for example, this photo

was a merge of hdr at f/22, it is definitely no way as soft as yours, not at this size
please note that hdr will also cause major softening in the image as well most of the time
view actual pixels in ps, maybe can see diffraction effect
otherwise, not really, looks more like unstable tripod with movement

actually I have tried using F11 to F22 up. It definitely doesn't look this soft. I think could be your focus is wrong? Everytime you hit the timer, the camera refocus again. It may have got that wrong. Use manual focus to get a sharp view in the viewfinder first, then hit it.

A bit late coming across this post. Your focus seems off so I would suggest focusing manually. It looks like you're shooting from the bridge - probably some ground movement when people walking by. If your camera has the anti-shake mechanism, switch it off. If you have a filter, take it off and use a lens hood to cut off extraneous light and reduce flare.

I too shot the Singapore river recently. Pentax K100D Sigma 24mm f11 about 30 sec. Used a friend's dinky tripod.

mmm...time to invest in one good stable tripod then...

mmm..... manual focus? kinda hard with my camera with 0.8x magnification for the viewfinder but will try it out.....

switch off the anti-shake? i thot it will help to reduce vibrations? no?

manual focusing for landscapes it not that hard.. just turn the focusing ring to infinity and you've pretty much ensured the focus is correct.. instead of letting the cam autofocus which may hunt abit in low light and throw the focus off..
