Most of your model pic are under exposed, can try using bounced flash next time :)

hi

can share with me which flash u using? been looking for a flash that can BOUNCE off those exhibition hall ceilings leh.

like that then can get the whole soften and balanced lighting look for the CHIO CHIO models

Haha. Thanks for your comment. :)

Actually I do have some full car pics. But I'm not a car enthusiast at all. Hahahaha. I went there was to test my 50mm f/1.8, which I got a day before. And it's a good protrait lens right?

The reason I pay $10 for the motorshow is basically for model shooting training. I didn't even take a single goodie bag home cause no space in my camera bag. LOL. But I considered that $10 well spent cause I learnt quite a few things. ;)

Cheers! ;)

firstly,
these people at the car shows are hardly models. they are at best talents who look good. if you have lobang to shoot models at $10, pls let me know. i will be more than willing to join u and do CLS or even carry your lights.

secondly,
i dont understand how gg to a car show is model training for u. u can hardly have the time to direct the "model", interact with her or even have any form of set up. i think what u were probably doing was to experiment with ur flash exposure. and if thats the case, it would probably be too expensive to do that. i would have just grab any of my friends and try shootin with flash. its FREE

I personally find that his photo are abit under instead of Over ... I dun understand why u say his white balance is inconsistent? i know that the lighting are the main cause ... but can be corrected by adjuzting the WB thru PS-ing ... Try to give some pointer to the individual photo so that he can make adjuztment or to take note of the way he took the pic ...

pls have a look at #7 and 8

Can what... You still can make request for poses from them... ;p

pls have a look at #7 and 8

#8 is RAW conversion, and I did change the WB to get this bluish/greenish feel. This pic was intended to be posted in dA, which is an individual pic submisson kinda thing. As now I'm posting many pics in this thread, it looks like a series and definitely, the WB don't match.

I hope it doesn't bother you much. ;)

Anyway I think Cyber was not saying that my WB is not off, but that WB can be changed in PS and maybe can focus on giving other kind of comments like "You should have used flash for pic #" or "more DOP for pic # could be nicer" for example. :D

There's always time to direct models ...

After visiting the event for a few days there, I noticed that there're always models with no one shooting them. In fact, there's no one testing the cars they're posing with. That's a good time to get your "special" shots :), quite a good way to practice for a "Car Theme" shoot too.

For your points.
1. Some of them are models actually. Not all, but quite a number of them. I've seen them and shot some before.
2. Its not really easy to grab a friend and shoot him/her. Like I said, quite a number of the showgirls are models, so its easier for them to face your lens than friends. $10 for a wholeday of practice is cheap, compared to going for group shoot sessions. And who says CLS cannot be done during an event ;p.

Yes the WB is off.

There are ways to go abt it, eg: setting ur custom white balance with grey card before shooting? Or post process to correct it. Shooting in RAW will enable you to adjust your colour temp and so on, but shooting in Jpeg can let you adjust the colour using the colour balancing options :).

You don't have to bounce the flash off that super high exhibition hall ceilings to create the effect. You can use your omnibounce, get a lightsphere or DIY a bounce card to diffuse or soften the flash :).

Now comes the question of whether pointing a big apperture lens at girls at car shows actually constitutes to 'model shooting'. How complex does it get? If shooting models were as simple as capturing a few sharp, properly exposed photos of smiling girls at a car show, anybody could be a fashion/portrait photographer. Event coverage at best, but no where near the sophistication of a planned and properly themed portrait shoot.

Sorry to crash your thread like this Sugary88, but I'm just trying to raise a few issues here. As for improving your photos, it's really much simpler than it seems. Know when to use a flash, and know when it's bright enough to go handheld. Find two nice white balance settings you have, for flash and without flash and stick to it. Digital is so hard to go wrong these days, what with all the trial and error you can do. Don't bother about raw, it's impossible to go so horribly wrong that you have to do such high levels of correction. Delete your photos if they're bad, it helps you learn!

like i said, there is sometimes a fine line between a model and a good looking talent. i dont think i will classify ANY of the girls shown as models.

to TS, i m sorry for crashing your thread. will not post any further. hope u can understand what a true model or portraiture shoot is one day.

Woos. Okok. Thanks for your pointers in the last paragraph!

Haha. Well, about the "model shooting" issue, I get your point. Ya agree that it's not those kind of real model shooting and it's a event in fact. It's more of "shooting models" than "model shooting". But abit weird if I phrase it as "shooting model training". ;p

But like we often say... practise makes perfect. I do think that this motorshow is a good basic training ground to have a try at shooting models and the tricky lighting there is good for practising your shots too. Furthermore, the models are willing to pose for you. I must say that the overall package is worth the $10. :D

pls enlighten what qualities should a model had?

Haha. I don't mind lah. Actually in my gallery, I already categorized my shots under "Photojouralism >> Events >> People".

Anyway, thanks for going through the trouble to point it out.

If you actually compare this with a group model shoot, u'll notice (for those large group shoots that is), its almost the same :) ...

Only the clothes and makeup is different. And its possible to do a nice portrait during the event, if you have what it takes that is. Unfortunately, I don't ;p.

And besides, although I'm using a big aperature cheapo lens, I did shoot at smaller aperatures ;p.

just saw your gallery.
didnt expect you to be just 18.
impressive start....you have the "eye" and the flair.
keep it up, dude.

Thanks bro. :D

I still at learning stage ah. Many technical jargons and calculations/rules I don't really understand. And need to brush up alot on my technique. Haha!
