A 50mm is also enough for the C-17 which flew by Wednesday or the A380 2 years ago. But for the jet trainers and helicopters, a crop sensor with a 300mm is really stretching the limits when they are flying at the top of an apex loop. Half the time you'll end up with garbage for these extreme distances at that focal length.
