Simple question: Stepping

I think whoever said that has ZERO knowledge of photography and was just trying to sound cheem by dropping a phrase that they thought applies.

yea dude. Sounds like poseur talk to me. :bsmilie:

"Oh, your lens is so avant-garde, I can see the bokeh constellation around the clipping! That is what gives great stepping!"

Ok, someone please give me a sledgehammer now...

it is not a really having steps, but rich in tonal range, like in shadow areas is not block up, and also highlight area not white wash, still able to see detail in it.
I know what you mean...
my brain keeps getting fixated on the 'STEP' part, that's all...

y'know... like STEP, vs SLOPE/GRADIENT.... :)

Thanks for making my day :D

Hi All.

What is stepping?
Sometimes I hear people say, "that photo has good stepping" ?
Or what is a step?

thanks!
I'm missing something basic

Maybe, it is stacking. Stacking is used in macro and landscape photography to achieve DOF and sharpness.

btw, if it is stacking, it means taking a few shots of a subject. And systematically focusing on different spots of the subject. Then using software to stack the images together to achieve ultra sharp photo.

Maybe.

Then again, the stacking can be good, but it seems illogical to say the photo has good stacking.

setting? haha also cant be. stepping is so illogical

Noted. I just take the liberty to read it as an incomplete sentence - good stacking technique. There might be some communication problem of hearing or pronouncing.
