I don't really trust Alan Photo... One morning I called them and asked for the price of MB-D200. The man said $215 including GST. I asked his name, and he told me to mention his name when I come. In the afternoon I went there, and I asked again the price. The person answers $245 excluding GST. Then I told him that earlier this morning I called. Only then he give me the $215 price...

Should I trust them next time?

i have to say that this AP saleman is a man of integrity for he kept his word to you.

Actually Some shops in Sim Lim are pretty good. Look out for case trust. Anyway i chanced upon a special Trade-In deal by Audio House i think in the strait times. You get to trade in up to $80 for old cameras / up to $150 for camcorders. And there are some freebies like 2 GB card x 2 , Camera Case, Extra Original Battery, Cleaning Kit, Tripod which i thought was pretty cool. Not too sure though when the offer is until.

I had bad experience with both Alan Sim lim, Cathay Peninsula , and De luxe Peninsula.
1. When I saw a promotion at Alan website that quote D40 kit with 2 GB and Nikon bag bonus for 799 I go there and talk to the shopkeeper that I interested with the promotion and I want to buy the D40, and you know what they say? "you have to print the promotion page and showed it to me" (I'm not seeing that information in the website) and I said that my house is far and he just said lightly "you go to the internet cafe and then print there and then come back here to show me the promotion page" inside my mind I said are you crazy??? I'm here to buy not to ask for free and you told me to do something ridiculous. I just go out the store and promise my self that I will never gonna buy something from you again.
2. Before I go to Alan I call Cathay to ask for D40 price, and they said that the price is 750 with tripod bonus, I talk to the lady that I will come to buy it but I don't need the tripod, can I change it with another bonus? she said no, I said ok, I want to buy SD card and standard bag for my D40 so how much? she said that 2 GB card is 40 and standard bag is 45, after hearing that I just feel so awful and decided not to buy there.
3. Finally I go to De luxe at Peninsula and after bargaining the deal price is 800, but after I paid it suddenly he said that my D40 need UV filter and he just couple the uv to my lens and ask 30 for a 10 dolar vitacon uv filter and his face is so sour that I better to pay it.

So my conclusion is I haven't found a honest and friendly in Singapore. :thumbsd:

yeah... De-Luxe photo... i just go there last week..., i check all the store in there to buy the lens for Canon EF 50mm / f1.8 guess what this is the store that give the best price 110SGD the rest one only can give me for 120SGD, then i agree to buy the lens but suddenly the storekeeper just ask my to purchase the UV lens for 30 SGD, but i refuse that... until he give me the price for Vitacon 52mm UV for 13 SGD, i had no choice unless to accept then UV which i found out that the UV only worth for 10 SGD. but i think i still lucky to get then lens for 110SGD my point to other buyer is make sure you know the price 1st and then just ignore if they offer you other things that you doesn't know the price... :)

Canon EF 50mm F1.8 worth $106.
Vitacon 52mm UV worth $6

Hehe...;)

Yeah I agree with you, $20 cheaper is not worthed. Next time I will try 3:16, I heard their good reputation too.
Thanks

M S Color is another good shop to go to.

TK photo at Shaw is also quite cheap

Case Trust? Since when has CASE really cared about trustworthy or lousy shops? From the reports here 50% of all camera shops in SLS should get DISTRUST award. Your repeated "recommendations" for Audio House will not bring any trust to this shop anyway. Rather a plague like Song Brothers.

In such cases just turn around and leave. It is exactly the same lousy tactics that Bally Photo and other shops are using: attract you with a cheap price for a reputable article and con you later with lousy but overprized add-ons that nobody needs. For 10 dollars you can get a lens cap which is a) not scratch-sensitive and b) faster to attach / detach. Why do you need a third party screw-on lens cap from Vitacon? I can't call that a UV filter ..
Do you call that luck: paying 120 bucks for the lens as in many other shops but getting a useless piece of glass on top?

coming from an insider's point of view. i'd advise you guys not to buy any stuff at sim lim.

let's just say i will not be surprised if you find a thumbprint on a 'brand new' camera package.

I hate SIM LIM. The Tourism Board seriously needs to do something about it, lest our angmoh tourists get pissed off. I recommend a wrecking ball crew.

Seriously, I don't understand some people who can spend hours going around various shops just for 5-10 dollar cheaper deals, and then complain when they get conned with a filter. Why not spend the extra 10 bucks for nice, pleasant and wonderful experience at a reputable shop?

It's the same logic for food. Why get pissed off over bad service by those famous hawkers when you can get great service elsewhere with almost as good food?

Agree mostly. But if you act as if you dont know much about what you are buying, you will definitely get ridiculously high prices. In case you dont know, the price tags on the products are usually up to double the price you can buy it for.Cathay salesman usually try to tell you that they give you a discount off the actual price lol.

It's sometimes fun to act like a tourist just to see what the tourist tax is for gear in SimLim.
Tried it on with a LowePro bag, asking S$380 on 1st level, and found the exact same sling bag on 3rd level for S$140!!!

Shocking really as trading standards would not allow in most other countries, however if you enter establishments where some bartering over price is normal, then you should expect a high first price.

Always investigate MRP of items you want before you go.

I concur.

Those shops that offer 120 might include a decent Hoya filter. Sure beats paying 120+ for the same lens but with a vitacon filter...

Hi Guys,

Like most bros here, we all looking for cheapest with most reliability (ai qi qi pi). All these shops are out to make a profit, but they have to balance service and honesty to survive long term- cheat or overprice 1 customer and the whole singapore knows. So how do we determine which shop essentially can offer the lowest price?

Its the rental - The salesperson wans your sale but he has to make a minimum profit, but the overheads which cost him the most is the rental, so IMO, city shops have extremely higher rentals than out of city shops, so if we are shopping for CHEAP dslrs (Like myself), I would expect to pay a cheaper price for the same model or lens in a shop that is out of town, but if I were to purchase it in town, I may expect not to get the cheapest price, but I would nego for more freebies, bcos freebies are stuff that these shops get FOC from their various suppliers, so it doesnt really add to their cost.

Hope the opinion helps.

btw again, anyone got recommendation for CHEAP 40D and 18-55mm f2.8 and 200mm f2.8 & 18-200mm? many tks!
