Sillica gel; thirsty hippo; dry boxes; dehumidifier lamp in a cupboard which one?

Hi I'm looking for a low cost Analog type hygrometer. I notice a post in this thread that says there those available from $6-$11 at the DIY shops - but I have been going around these shops however, have not found any. Only the nearly $30 type digital ones.

Does anyone know exactly where to get an analog hygrometer?

I plan to buy a dry cabinet at the end of the year, when my budget is ok again (now funds depleted due to excessive BBB virus attack). In the meantime i need to monitor the humidity in my existing dry box without busting the bank!

I use a drybox with a rechargable silica pack. Once teh indication turns pink, I plug the pack into an AC outlet and charge (actually got heater inside to dry the silica) and put back into drybox. However I'm planning to DIY a glass cabinet with dehumifier lamp together with the same silica pack (for backup).

Hey, care to share where can you buy such a pack and how much? Thanks!

I use a dry box with BAMBOO CHARCOAL. These can be found at hardware shops and are packed in cloth bags that come in purple, green and blue colours. Bamboo charcoal is known to have high porosity. Various impurities or foreign matter will be absorbed on the wide surface area of the charcoal. When air passes, and if humidity is high, the charcoal will adsorb the moisture, and air will be converted to dry. If the air is too dry, then the charcoal will discharge its moisture, thus adjusting the humidity in the air.

They are said to last up to a year. The bags are secure and look good. Whenever I bring my Lowepro Vertex 200AW out, I place one of these charcoal bags inside.

Charcoal is rather used as filter - but that means the air (or water) needs to pass through the filter material. Just putting it into your bag will not help much. Beside this: what is the humidity that the charcoal will achieve in the long run? You describe it as a kind of natural humidity regulation - but at which RH level? Also: how do you know when it's time to replace your charcoal bag? The idea is not bad but without any control it makes little sense. Also, be careful with charcoal dust. If you have grabbed BBQ charcoal with bare hands you'll know how "affectionate" it can be to hands. Don't want to have that somewhere near my camera.

audio house is giving electronic dry cabinet and battery grip along with the other freebies if you buy their advertised camera on website.. i think d60, d90 and 450d is included.

quite worth it eh, if the price is similar to elsewhere.

I poured the gel inside the box and leave my camera inside.

Do i need to do any other precautions beside checking whether the gel has turn pink or colorless?

Is it safe to do it this way to prolong my camera?

and the only way u can tell if its working if by putting a sillica gel pack in it
they hygro meter can spoil

to me a lock tight box i can possibly bring overseas.
they stack nicely

that's my perceived pros..

no other precautions needed although I would try to separate the silica gel from the camera physically.
the dust might not be good for moving parts
the balls also might leave marks on the rubber parts of the camera if its pressed against it for too long

if u using sillica gel
the color is the indicator of the silica gel is still good at absorbing moisture hence an indirect way of telling the humidity

that only tells u that the humidity level is back up but it does nothing to bring the humidity levels back down..
if ur bright blue sillica gel starts turning abit light blue or pink u know that ur hygrometer / dehumidifier is not working and u need to
1) buy a new dry cabi
2) buy more silica gel

I think you might have a misconception about the role of a dry cabinet and how silica gel works.

1. With a dry cabinet you want to keep humidity around 50%, not as low as possible.

2. Silica gel will absorb moisture until it cannot absorb any more - which might be because it is filled with moisture, or there is no more moisture left to absorb.

3. Silica gel changing color has nothing to do with the moisture level in the air. And it does not give off moisture and return to blue unless heated (at 120 degrees C according to wikipedia).
