Sigma DP2M - A User's Review

I see some potential of this camera as a B&W camera.

And no one cursed at the 46MP as they did the 36MP of the D800 (FF)... strange...

that is because 46mp is marketing speak, technically it is 15m per layer, viewed at 1 layer, unlike the D800 which is a bayer sensor and single layer ....

The shadows look darker in these images probably because of the broader dynamic range of Foveon images. There are actually a lot of details in the dark areas of these reduced size images that I posted.

Is that what the sensor actually did, have you tried exposure compensation or different metering? ....

Many users overseas have also noted that the new Foveon sensors in the SD1M and DP2M have a tendency to block shadows.
As it is also very easy to recover details in the highlights in over-exposed images from these cameras, some of them have suggested increasing the exposure compensation by +1EV to get better details in the shadow areas. I'm trying out this suggestion by setting a +0.7EV exposre compensation myself.

If the ev comp can do it, then it is not much of a problem. Do you still have the raw for #13, can you do a +1ev with spp and maybe post the same jpeg size of that for comparison, that would help a lot, TIA :)

For that shot, the details in the shadows could be opened up in Sigma Pro Photo with the x3f Fill Light function but the overall exposure would have to be reduced to overcome the resulting over-exposure caused by the use of the Fill Light function.

The image that has been adjusted to my liking is below. Anyone can adjust the shadow details level of any x3fimage to their liking by balancing the use of exposure and x3f fill light functions in SPP.

thanks for that tomcat, Sigma should have done better with those sample photos for this camera on their website ....

Actually Sigma does have a dedicated website just for the DP2M. It's here. And when you're there, make sure to check out the photos in their special column called, Behind The Mystique. This camera can capture amazing details! I so want to get this for my daily walkabout camera and use film only on weekends and special occasion!

GAS is playing on me again! ;)

that was where the photos I was referring to, there is not much life in some of them, especially those shots of people where the colours were mediocre and rather flat, colours are not the same as details ....

Hi all,
I notice quite a few of you are curious about the image quality of the dp2m. I have the dp2 (14mb, previous model) I assure you that it can be quite a surprise!
I would like to upload an image shot a few nights ago. It is unprocessed and was saved as a 4.64mb jpg file at a quality of 12. I would like to upload it if someone could teach me. I don't quite understand the url prompt when i tried to insert image. I assure you i am not a sale staff of sigma. Just smittened by the image quality of an underdog. I would like to see it gain more fans!

You need to upload your image to your own web-site or a web-based image hosting site like flickr or pbase, etc and then insert the image's url together with the image's format extension between the 'Insert Image' prompt like this...

As a new member, you may not be immediately able to post hotlinked images. I think there's a requirement to make a minimum no. of posts before you can successfully post an image.

Anyway, the image quality from the DP2 is very good. This is one of my images from the DP2.

Hey bro, I'm really keen in getting the DP2M as my daily walkabout camera. Love the colours and details it can produce! Since it is just launched not long ago, knowing what you know about Sigma and their 'practice', do you think I should wait for a couple of months for the firmware and price to stabilize or I can get it now without any hesitation? I'm very new to Sigma. Hence the question. I don't want to end up same like when I bought the X100 Black at $1999 and a few months later, Fuji dropped it to $1599.

Thank you in advance for your kind reply.

omg, so much detail and shrpness

if you don't need it now, then it is better to wait until a firmware upgrade is available (service pack 1), then the situation can be access better .... I hope there won't be any hardware changes ....

better still, wait for the DP1 Merrill to be release, so far I have not seen any indication, anyone? ....

First of all, the street price of the DP2M in Singapore is comparable to the street price in US and comes with a free flash worth $188 some more which the US buyers don't get. This free flash offer being a National Day offer is valid till end of this month. And you would need the flash because the DP2M does not come with built-in flash. Sigma is not known to drop the price of their cameras until the next successor is out, except for the SD1... but that's because it was grossly overpriced in the first place. Even then, they did make it up to early adopters in the States by giving them back the difference in cash vouchers redeemable for Sigma products. Don't know if they did the same here or not though.

Secondly, there is nothing very much wrong with the firmware as it is at the moment. What's not right with the DP2M like slow AF in low light, poor high ISO performance, slow writing of RAW files to memory card, so-so video recording etc cannot be corrected by firmware updates, so there is no point waiting for this to happen.

So if you can live with the quirks of the DP2M, you should get one now while you can still get the flash for free (make sure you cut the voucher from the newspaper (there's one in yesterday's ST, I think) to redeem the flash at the dealers).

this is not about whether the firmware is right or wrong, but whether hardware issues can be fix by a firmware upgrade, but hardware issues are not really known at this time because there aren't that many users due to the availability of the camera, though the pricing was available in the US last month (or before), it was good for delivery only last 2 weeks(?) which is hardly encouraging .... so it is too early to tell until more people buy it and report real issues with it, I think given the past history of the DPs, people are waiting, and this people are likely to be previous owners .... usage enhancements can be made with a firmware upgrade, assuming all things are in order .... DP2 to DP2s to DP2x, get the idea ....

what can be worse than buying a unit now, only to find that 6 months down the road, newer units come with some hardware revision ....

New cameras come out all the time. If we want to wait for the ultimate camera to come out before buying, we might never buy any camera in our lifetime. The incremental improvements in hardware capabilities from DP2 to DP2s to DP2x do not justify buying the new models if we already have one of them. The images from my old DP2 is still much better than any of my latest P&S cameras as far as I'm concerned in good lighting conditions. If we subscribe to the practice of waiting for the latest variation before buying, we would not buy one even when DP1000 comes into the market and meanwhile, we are only depriving ourselves the pleasure of using one of these cameras.

Thanks for the posting tip. Another amazing detailed shot from from dp2m! This will definitely win over those who love details and sharpness in. their pictures. You have probably help win over a few more dp fans. Do you have a similar scene with your D800 on a 50mm lens?
