Sigma DP2M - A User's Review

Thanks for risking life and limbs bringing in bringing this shot to us.
You're welcome. ;)
It's a risk worth taking. The hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia is a must for any trip to Turkey. The thrill and the view is worth every cent they charge for the ride. The sight of so many balloons filling the sky is absolutely spectacular.

Did you compare images taken with your 800e and the DP2M. What's your opinion?

Under good lighting conditions, the image quality of the DP2M is unbeatable even by the D800E.
This is especially so when viewed at 100% crop. When viewed at reduced resolution on the monitor, the images from the D800E can be quite pleasant though.

This hot air balloon shot was taken with the D800E and is similar to that in #35 which was taken with the DP2M.

A larger version similar in resolution and size of that from the DP2M is here.

Compare to the full resolution version of #35 and see which looked better to you.

Even though I'm very happy with the image quality of the DP2M in good lighting conditions, it can never be my main camera as it is just not versatile enough for the type of photography that I'm into. For one thing, it does not have image stabilisation or high ISO capability and it can be quite frustrating to use handheld under indoor conditions. The D800E on the other hand has no problem and is very dependable.

Take these 2 handheld shots for example of the same indoor scene taken with the DP1M and D800E.

It was very difficult to shoot this scene with the DP1M as I didn't want to use higher ISO and so had to contend with very low shutter speed and the resultant handshaking problem. It was not a problem with the D800E because of VR and excellent high ISO performance.

I knew you would have a test shot comparing them. Thanks! i am thinking of the sd1 m since they share the same sensor. But i also know the short coming of the SD1m.

I just received a review unit of this Sigma DP2M yesterday. I'm not a Sigma camera fan myself but I like the simple and clean menu navigation and button controls. I will definitely not be going too technical in my review since you have done a great job here. Once completed, my review will be posted on my blog at Music.Photo.Life. and XINMSN. If you guys have any other areas that want me to cover, please let me know and I will try my best to include in my review. Cheers!

My review on the DP2M is published. Here's sharing my opinions on this camera with a spectacular sensor built in a body trapped in past technology.

Are shops actually selling BP-31 batteries here?

No need to buy original. Can use Ricoh GRD or equivalent readily available 3rd party ones instead.

The picture from the DP2M seems a lot cooler. Is it a WB issue? Which version is closer to the actual color in the scene?

If you are coming from Canikon and the rest, you will find the colors from the Faveon sensors are sort of muted .... that's how someone described when he had seen my pictures. But nonetheless, they are true to life ......... you do have to watch out for the WB settings on the camera especially if you are a JPEG shooter.

It was a very sunny afternoon at the time and the natural light in the shade was very cool as could be seen in the foregrounds in both the shots. I would have to say the Sigma shot is closer to the actual color of the scene at that time.. but the colors of the Nikon shot does look esthetically more pleasing to the eye. ;)

Thanks for the clarification guys! I'm coming from Pentax, which I find has more natural/neutral looking colours than Canikon. But the Foveon output looks even more muted. I have to say even though the Sigma shot is closer to reality, it could do with more punch in the colours though! :p

Having said that there could be a slight exposure difference between the two images that exacerbates the perceived colour as well.. :dunno:

These Sigma cameras are really tempting... if only they had something wider than the 19mm on the DP1M though, then I'll snap one up as my dedicated landscape camera! I'm too used to my 10-20mm on my dSLR.

Actually, I don't find Sigma's colors to be mute at all. If you look at the other photos taken with the DP2M in Turkey in this post, you would find that the colors are not mute at all and are very film/slide-like. It is only with these 2 photos taken of the same scene by the DP2M and Nikon D800 under a challenging exposure condition that the difference is so obvious.

In any case, I don't mind differences in color schemes between camera systems since they can always be tweaked to one's satisfaction during post-processing. The same cannot be said for resolution though. :)

It would be good if Sigma could allow color bias tweaking with the next firmware release, then it all comes down to personal color preferences.

The firmwares of the DP1M, DP2M and SD1M as well as Sigma PhotoPro have been updated to include a new color mode Foveon Blue... good for those who like to have eye-popping blue colors. Maybe I would reprocess some of my Sigma images in this mode to see how they look. :)

Tried it liao ....... people end up looking like smurfs .....:p

Ha Ha... I think it should only be used for landscapes with lots of sky or water contents. Otherwise, it should be used with a layer mask to prevent those parts that should not be blue from turning blue. Though I think in many cases, it might just be too exaggerated an effect.

Here's a couple of shots from the DP2M in Foveon Classic Blue color mode.
