Take for example a canon 17-40L. It has two rings:bsmilie: . one to zoom, another to focus. during autofocusing, the focus ring doesn't move, so it is safe to actually grab hold of the whole lens body without disturbing the focus.

My question right now is of the sigma 50-500 on a KM 7D. does the focus ring turns when auto focusing?

to answer your question... i dunno... hehe cos last use forget when...

but i know the ring moves on the tamron 90 macro. but IIRC the ring dun move on 50-500 if u slide to auto.

there's a slide? cool. you mean really slide or those AF-MF switches?

Maybe its only canon's ring USM that has full-time manual focus? Not to sure myself...
