No specific steps taken to prevent possible paint peeling huh?![]()
Sorry to side track. Is paint peeling a big problem with Sigma lens? Does this happen throughout its range or its limited to the big zoom lens only?
Peeling is common on Sigma lenses, am gonna take great care of my piece to ensure that nothing of that such happen. Not sure about its entry level lenses though.
Care to share how you plan to do that if you are not gaffing it? Is there any clear gaff tape? Only show those with brown or green camo
Thanks for sharing. The lens is quite versatile in terms of its focal range.Has anyone tried this particular lens on before?
How's the AF performance and image quality throughout the range? And to Canon users, how's it compared to Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS L?
Would appreciate if any mates here can provide some reviews on it.
Thanks!
Hi there,
I use this lens a fair bit for my birding. The AF can go wild sometimes especially when focussing on a bird with branches in front or in poor light condition. It would not be able to pin point on the subject - one minute in focus and the next minute out of focus. A manual focus would solve the problem. Other than that, it is a sharp lens and produces beautiful and sharp pictures. Closing up on butterflies and dragon flies and flowers is breeze with clear details. You can see some of my birds taken with this lens @ www.flickr.com/photos/jbfoo

:bsmilie: 1.2K, I guess that's a very hard price to get, not even in States.atsuki has a point. The Bigma and the 150-500mm are severely OVERPRICED in spore. the International price should be in the range of 1200-1400 SGD Max. and the aperture is HELLAVA small at 6.3. It is only useable in daytime. Indoor, u can keep the lens in the dry cabinet, and use a compact instead bcos its AF wont work well in low light.
I've tried both Bigma and 150-500, and the BIGMA wins the 150-500 HANDS down in terms of contrast and sharpness, but the downside is it has NO VR/IS.... very hard to use handheld unless in bright daylight.
The YEN has dropped to a low of 100 last couple of weeks, as I had predicted, but during that period, NOBODY DECREASED camera prices..... But when YEn increase, all the shops start spreading rumours of price increase to justify an oligopolistic grip over the local kiasee spore market....
I would get it if the Bgma is priced about SGD$1200....
justmy 2 cents worth yoh...
I have tried both the Canon EF 100-400 and the Sigma 50-500 (Bigma). I would say the image quality is toe to toe. I like the slight advantage of Bigma's wider range (that 50mm is very useful) but like the 100-400 IS. Canon's USM and Sigma's HSM both were very close in performance. The Bigma has slightly warmer colors.
I currently own the Bigma and it has proven to be a consistant performer. Sharpness is good wide open and excellent at f8 to f11. You gotta see it at 100% to appreciate its ability to resolve details. Its heavy but can be handheld while panning. I use a monopod with it most of the times. Use this in bright light, it tends to hunt a little at max zoom when the lighting is bad (f6.3 at max zoom but reports to camera body as f5.6). You CAN couple a 1.4x extender but it will degrade the image a little. Do note that the filter thread is 86mm if you want to get a UV filter for it.
The Bigma is finished in typical Sigma's EX series coating which gives it a nice suede like rubbery surface. Its great when new but after years of usage it will peel. That was a real bummer for me. But I am still keeping it as it has never failed me in delivering good shots.
 Thanks for the review. Currently I have 100-400mm L and am waiting for my 50-500mm to arrive. If its good, most probably might consider another set for my brother.![]()
Yoh, I think u need another brother...:bsmilie:
