I bought the 50 F1.4 from John 3:16 end of May for $820 with GST. Check with the few reputable shops, should be ard this price +/-$20.

someone selling his set from korea with no receipt :D

looks a good buy :)

Hi Guys,

I using a Canon 40D body but not sure whether to get a 50mm or a 30mm f/1.4? Reason being although a 50mm on a crop body is quite tight but you do not need to stand so near to a person if you want to take a half-body portrait. But if you use a 30mm you need to stand nearer right? So shld i get a 50mm or a 30mm? Headache ah!

Thanks for all your advise in advance.
Regards,
JUN

that's true sometimes 50mm is a bit tight for indoor shots esp when you don't have much room to manually zoom with your legs.

alternatively, i'm wondering if the 30mm f1.4 is compatible with canon x1.4 extender? if so, how's the resulting image?

Depends most of the time you shoot in what environment. If you have enough space, use the longer lens. Nicer perspective. If you have plans to upgrade to fullframe, get the 50 lor, it fits both. The 30mm is only for APSC.

If i not wrong, the canon extender only for L lenses i believe. Not sure whether it fits.
But i know kenko teleplus extender can fit, and it works except that the F stop reading wont be correct. i.e. camera still shows F1.4, but actually is 1 stop down. For canon 1.4 exender on L lens, it will compensate accordingly. i.e. the lens is at F4, add in the extender, camera will show F5.6

Image quality wise, not so good imho. Acceptable to some though. Its something like degrading the image quality from a prime lens to a zoom lens. This is based on my trying out of a kenko teleplus on sigma 30mm, canon 50mm & 85mm. Others may have different experience though.

shouldn't by right the 30mm more expensive than the 50mm? or is 50mm more expensive?

I think all along the 30mm 1.4 is $700+ while the 50mm 1.4 is $800+. Both of the lenses are F1.4 and from Sigma EX series. The 30mm is for APS-C only while the 50mm can be used for both APS-C and Full frame.

50mm f1.4 is new, while 30mm f1.4 is old & only for bodies with crop factor. The newer 50mm f1.4 can be used with full frame bodies.
