Sigma 30 f2.8 for nex lens mod

It is around $250+- street price, but due to this forum, it is extremely hard to find one nowadays!

Sharpness wise, it is AS GOOD AS the Sony Carl Zeiss 35mm F2.8 FE on the A7R at the centre. Imagine this is just $250 vs the $1,069 price of 35FE.

Of course, for $1,069, you get one of the best Full Frame 35mm available for A7/R with no dark corners. But for $250, you can the same sharpness from the best 35mm lens (it is 30mm), but with some dark corners which you can remove the vignette with lightroom and get the similar 35mm equivalent after cropping without the dark corners. $250 + some manual processing with lightroom = IQ of $1,069 without need to process. Sounds fair?

The new version is metal exterior which looks more classy, while the old version is all plastic (very popular when Nex 7 was still the king of Nex). Both are optically superb though, just that the metal one (ART version) feels much better built!

HK has many stocks =) can go there to cheong , around the same price , slightly cheaper if I am not wrong

Wow... no trips planned for HK leh... Anyone going to HK the next few days/weeks?

hmmm really? I thought they were the same optical design with just a different housing. The Sigma 30 1.4 on the other hand was a redesign between the art version and the original ex hsm version.

not sure if the sharpness score differences is an example of sample variation. but anyway the art version is sharp as hell on the a7r. it actually matches my sigma 35 1.4 in sharpness in the center of the frame at F2.8

Just saw a colleague with a old version of the Sigma 30mm EX DN (plastic exterior version) on his Nex 7, and borrowed for a few test shots on my A7R.

Unbelievable results. Sharper than the new metal version of the Sigma 30mm, and the centre is extremely sharp.

Did a quick research, and now you know why. The old lens has a better formula and I am guessing this is the same lens as the Sigma Merrill.

Weird though, the exterior, lens design, 7 blades, Made in Japan. All exactly similar as the 35FE F2.8.

Do you think Sony has asked Sigma to produce the 35FE as OEM supplier?

there is another lens that has potential for modification that may cover full frame even better. but the modification will likely be more difficult, and it is a more expensive lens. The touit 32 1.8.

results shld be interesting if the rear baffle and that additional black barrel over the rear element can be removed. The rear element of this lens is significantly larger than that of the sigma 30 2.8, and is actually about the same size as the front element.

anyone with this lens and the necessary tools willing to give it a shot? potentially a zeiss 32 1.8 for the same price as the FE35 2.8 hehe

image of the circular vignette probably caused by the round baffle on the touit 32 1.8

haha if i can find one cheap cheap i don't mind trying. current prices are too high hehe

I would expect very good results from d Touits

I modded a friend's touit without him knowing. It doesn't work. Lots of heavy vignetting

hmm u removed the baffle but did u remove this black tube surrounding the last element? i don't think that part is removable without actual sawing/shaving off the plastic which is ireversible
