Nice pictures, I think the PQ is a tad better than the 28-70. I love those bokehs.

As for CA, I suppose the last flower picture does show color fringing.

From these pictures, I believe Sigma has proven itself as a good value lens supplier, especially in price when compared to Camera makers low and mid-price lenses.

Enjoy your lens.

Is this lens still available? Remember reading somewhere that Sigma had ceased production for the 24-60.

I doubt it's CA for the last flower, could be Pentax color. Maybe these non sharpen/color correction shots will let u judge the CA better.

Yeap they ended production for it, that's why some US retailers are clearing them at cheap prices;) My Pentax is only US$200, other mounts are like US$220 on Amazon. Problem is you'll need go thru Vpost, which takes abt 2 weeks to reach >.<

The railing photo shows that its CA handling performance is quite high.

These are the test shots using a Nikon D80 body, Sigma 28-70mm EX DG F2.8 at various F-stops, no filters on lens, stationary on table. Pictures were shot in raw and converted to JPG, reduced in size to 50%, no additional sharpening, ISO 200, 0EV compensation, no flash was used. As these shots were done in room lighting, timing were long.

Shots at 28mm.

Thanks for looking.

found this site, not sigma 28-70, but sigma 24-70 f2.8 against canon 24-70 f2.8

http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/2470exl

the sigma seems to perform better.

Got the Sigma and used the Canon version extensively (good friends ;p), I'd agree with the tester on PBase that given a good sample of the Sigma, optically they are very very close. The Canon just have a little more contrast. If a good sample of the Sigma can be found it's as sharp, just that USM can get pretty addictive. :bsmilie: But honestly for the price of the Sigma, I couldn't have asked for more.

hi...is there any different between 24-70mm f2.8 vs 24-70mm F2.8 Macro for sigma...how come the lens stucture is different althought the focal lenght is the same. need some help on this.

There's a difference at least in that the 28-70 f2.8 has 1 more element (14 element in 12 groups) than the 24-70 macro (13 elements in 14 groups). Also from the MTF charts, the 24-70 macro was supposed to have better resolving power compared to the 28-70, I believe the designs were different in optimizations. The 28-70 macro has a clutch design for manual over-ride, the 28-70 is only screw driven by camera body, this difference is enough to warrant body size difference already. Besides, if you compare to Nikkor (28-70 f2.8, no longer in production) or Canon design, the lens in this range were even heavier and bigger in size.

hi..Nic67 thanks for the advice.I got a offer for 24-70mm F2.8 Macro with 82mm UV filter at sgd700. is there any other lens suggestion for this budget?

Hi,

$700 for the 24-70 f2.8 macro is a good price, but given that a brand new piece would cost about $80 more, you may have to consider the age of the lens you're looking at.

My take would be to be on hold for the new Sigma 24-70 f2.8 HSM, but if you are really in need of such focal lengths, I guess the $700 is still a good buy.

Another route I suggest you looked at would be from the 2nd hand shops for a Tokina 28-70 (or 28-80, I can't remember exactly) f2.8 for around $430-560 or thereabouts.

I would whole heartedly recommend the lens I use, as it cost less than the $700 you will be buying at brand new. Besides, the 82mm filter in the 24-70 macro is quite expensive, not sure if you are given the filter with purchase?

Anyway I hope you find a good piece and enjoy the lens.

A new set of that lens retails for almost that price (of course, without filter). I don't think it's a very good offer.

Hi All

I just bought Sigma 28-70 f2.8 lens yesterday. It costed me SGD740 include filter from funan digital mall. I was not sure price is resonable or not?. I bought it after viewing user experience. This is my first time using sigma lens and try to shoot some pix at indoor and compare with nikon f3.5 w/o flash. Len is no OS. so I hold up firmly and shoot at indoor light. I could not find the clear focus on some pix that I took. Don't know why?

Is there some setting need to do at my camera?. I am using NIKON D2H and mostly I took indoor pix with program auto, auto WB and smaller ISO range 200~ 400. I found Nikon lens got more clear focus. kindly advice to me if you have similar feeling.

Thank in advance.

hi everyone,
just bought a 2nd hand one 28-70 F2.8

saw on the 1st post that the filter size is 67mm but mine is 77mm, is there a different model?

one more thing, i kind of find the pics to be rather soft at 70mm, is this common?
