Hi Vocalmind, I usually use simple AA battery to test front & back focus issue. Just line about 5 AA battery diag and shoot at the center batt.

For this sigma, from what i heard is that it tend to had focus issue at 24mm (Max/min aperture)) and 70mm (Max/min aperture), you can add another at 50mm.

Hi Shawn, thanks man. The link i posted uses a printed graduated lines, which i think is similar to your method.

That focus issue you mentioned is biased to the front or back? Coz, if this lens front and back focus bias is somehow realistically accurate from 2.8 to 5.6 (tested at 24, 50, 70mm) then it should be safe to buy.

What you think?

Yap, if the focus of this lens is spot on. Then it damn sharp.

As for it focus issue, there are many said.

1)Some said it back focus on 24mm and front on 70mm and spot on at 50mm
2)Some said it focus good on one carmera but back/front focus on the other
3)Some live with the focus problem as long as carmera can do compensation

So in simple word, it is inconsistence. So when buying this lens be sure to bring ur carmera that you want to use it with for testing. But anyway in case your lens really got issue after purchase, a trip to the service center should fix it.

How it would exactly works?

Anyway, so long sigma service center got fix then i guess it is safe to buy. But I doubt they are fixing the lens to be spot-on, and there would still be off somehow along the focal length.

Sigh, i wish the shop can let me test the lens and don't give me those angry look if i don't buy.

Higher level DSLR had setting for focusing shift. I do not know how it work (I don't own 1 :-p), but it does. Provided that the lens back/front focus issue is consistence

Sigma is infamous for it lens QC, Thus it does take a little more effort on user part to ensure the lens is working properly. But that's what make the $1000+ difference in price. Good luck on your purchased :-)

I bought my lens @ best denki and I tested some in cathay photo and they are nice people, they don't look at you with angry faces hehehe. I guess it differs from shop to shop ;)

Hi all,

I just returned from HK and got my copy of the 24-70 HSM. From my usage while I was there, I can confirm that my copy has a back focusing issue at 60-70mm wide open, and this gets apparent when the subject is approximately 5m or more away, slight softness when the subject is around 2m away, but sharp when taken close up. However, once stopped down to f4 or f5.6, the lens is sharp, very sharp.

I'm intending to send the lens for calibration just to make sure that this lens can actually perform well at 70mm wide open, otherwise, it's gonna be quite a disappointment.

Just a side note, I paid HKD 5,700 = SGD 1,030 from a shop along Nathan Road, Tin Cheung's price was HKD 5,500 but they were out of stock, and other places were quoting above HKD 6,000.

Cheers!

Does the lens from Ting Cheung comes with international warranty?

yes it is int. wty, all you need to do is to retain the receipt from them and the warranty card in the event that you require servicing..

I feel like changing my Canon 24-105 F4 to this 24-70mm... guyz, U think worth it?

hi do sigma charge for the calibration? is the location at bukit merah? Thanks!

I believe calibration should be free if the lens is covered by warranty. Will be heading down to the service centre tomorrow to get my lens calibrated.

Hi, can I just check the price of this lens in Singapore now? I'm currently out of country and wouldn't be returning for some time.

thanks so i assume that the calibration is for the particular model of camera so that the af is better? can it be collected immediately?

Thank you :)

I think it's worth it, from F4 to 2.8 it's a good lens but you loose the the rest of the zoom. I got the 18-105 VR and I never missed it since I got my lens.

I got a quote from Ms color 2~3 weeks ago. Prices include GST is S$1500.

I just bought this lens and got mixed result.
I found there is slight front focussing issue on 70mm and back focussing on 24-35mm.
It seems less issue on 50mm.

I will bring the lens to Sigma for calibration on Monday next week.
