Sigma 18-200mm with OS

TK selling the Canon mount @ $760 IIRC.

some in dpreview say sigma 18-200OS sharper than nikon 18-200VR in 200mm...:o

I can't believe that. From the test shots i saw, the 200mm of the Sigma isn't very impressive and also, the OS can't compare to Nikon's VR. Nikon's latest version of VR in the 18-200mm can go down to up to 4 stops, i believe (with steady hands). But all this of course comes at a PRICE! +-1200 vs $790. Personally, i'll wait till one of the reputable magazines or lens websites reviews the Sigma before i plunge in. My main worry is the distortion at the wide end which is very bad even for the Nikon lens.

Anyone tried yet have sample pics to show? I too busy lately to go try :dunno:

MTF 50 looks fine to me, considering the range and price.

Whoever buys this lens buys it for the convenience and not so much the image quality anyway, especially when travelling.

Used to own the non-OS version, the ability to shoot wide, then zoom in close, then shoot wide again, without needing to change lens or carry 2 bodies, priceless. But that lens sharpens up from f/8, which makes it difficult to handhold in lower lighting.

Now with OS, it's become a much better travelling lens. F/8, 1/10sec, handheld, woohoo!

Buy this if you want a convenient, 3-in-1 lens. (OS, 18-70, 70-200)
And if you don't mind slow focusing, mediocre image quality, bulk.
It blocks the cam's built in flash a bit.
At least the OS really works!

- TK is selling this lens at $760 (usually is nett price if pay cash)
- Tested the lens with 400D.
- The Sigma 18-200mm OS is not as long as the Canon 70-300mm IS which I own, but it feels heavier.
- The build is solid (feel) and I like the handling due to the fat barrel.
- Focusing speed is slow when tested indoor (quite dim at Shaw Tower 2nd FL) but personally I feel that it is sufficient for normal or non-sport photography. I suspect the speed could be much faster if use outdoor.
- I was able to obtain good shot at 200mm hand held at 1/20. The OS really works.
- Tested 200mm hand held at 1/8 speed with 50% success (view from 2.5" LCD)
- Can not comment on image quality unless I get the chance to download the image to a PC, but viewing from the LCD, the color appears vivid and warm.
- On close inspection, the image exhibits some barrel distortion at 18mm when view from the LCD. Not sure how severe when view on a PC. BTW, my Canon 17-40mm 4.0L also has such distortion. I guess it is acceptable if it is not too severe.

Thanks, good review. Seems like the OS is really works, and don't seem too bad compared to VR or IS. 200mm 1/20secs is already more than what i can hope for.

I will go back there to test the lens again, this time with my own camera so that I will get to view the images on my PC. If the images meet my requirement, I will buy it. With this lens, I need to maintain fewer lenses in my collection, and this one will be my travelling lens :) .

The Canon EF28-135mm IS is my current favorite, but I always find it not wide enough.

Another interesting point is the front element of this Sigma 18-200mm OS does not rotate.

Hi, as for focusing even usm also will slow down slightly if under poor lightg cond.(just to be frank and fair) coz I've tried models walking on stage with lens attached to 20D not an issue( surprised myself too) at all to captured them on the move(not standing still).

Btw, pls keep thread clean. Thanks a million.

Hi clicknick,

I remember I bought it from CP last week (was the last copy so might not be 1st to owned & not of any importance while Most Importantly is I need this range with 'OS' coz age catching up=handshake more pronounced nowadays & avoid 'DUST' enter while keep changing lenses of shorter-focal-length:sweat: eg my previous sold Sigma70-300 which reason why I hardly use).

As for the I.Q. as above mentioned + (pls note that my expectation might not be same as your coz I'm not 'Pro-standard' ok), but its definitely better than my previous 18-200(=62mm 1=maybe that time I got a lemon:sweatsm: ).

In terms of colours & contrast I get/find (direct from cam=no PS yet) is , as well as sharpness is most obviously improved:bigeyes: (to me). I find/feel that the size/barrel 72mm fit nicely on my hand.

Btw, if fact the overall length of this new lens is nearly same as 17-85-IS of my which I've not try with built-in flash coz I prefer bounce or tilt flash results whether there any blockage/partially, if yes then my new 10-22 with 77mm size may blocked even more:dunno: . (OT abit=I was actually rushing b4 7% must add on this 2-lenses if can decide to retain my DSLR system=pluzzling sometimes but finally over).
