I am thinking of getting a D40 or D40x with a Sigma 18-200mm lens. Does anyone know how much would that cost? Is the D40 or D40x sold with body only? If not, how much can I sell the 18-55mm lens that comes with it?

I am also a single lens type..

D40/x are sold with kit lens only.
Take the D40 at about $850 + Sigma $800 = $1650.
Sell off the 18-55 for about $110, so it all add up to $1540.
Throw in a drycab for $100 and some accessories, you're looking at smelly-smelly $1700.
Hope that helps.

don't need dry cab, IMHO. 18-55 market price dropping, so I would say a better estimate. Sigma is around $820.

Newsflash... Sigma 18-200mm OS HSM going for $799 at MSC. From what I could see from LCD screen, it is as sharp as the Nikon 18-200. Can't really compare between OS and VR though.

For ergonomics wise, do take note that if you've got big hands/long fingers, they may hinder the Sigma focus ring during AF, cos it's much broader than the Nikon's.

I finally managed to test out my new D40x + Sigma OS HSM 18-200mm in my garden. I used the Auto Focus Mode and Auto ISO as this is my first DSLR, not very sure how to use the functions yet or do the setting.

All the pictures are taken at the max 200m zoom with OS on, held in my hands.

I am suprised that with my shaky hands, the pictures are clear and sharp.

Have loaded 6 pictures taken in the below link for reference.

However I got to practice not to touch the Sigma focus ring during AF, one of my finger would touch the focus ring during AF for the first few pictures. I felt the zoom is quite stiff. Have not try other zoom lens before. Are all zoom lenses stiff?

I would think that both D40X and Sigma OS HSM is value for money. Any tips to share?

a more "extreme" test would be be to shoot at 1/10-1/30 with OS at the tele end...a good indicator of how well the OS performs...steady hands would definitely help...

Bro,
What is 1/10-1/30 ?

He means shutter speed of 1/10-1/30 seconds.

Mmm...I would say I'm rather impressed with the performance of this lens, looks pretty good from the pictures provided. It will be nice if 100% crops are included, cause at 10.2 MP and at the given size, the picture is confirm more or less sharp.

Anyway, thanks for your effort in showing us these pics! Nice shots!:)

How do I get or change the shutter speed of 1/10-1/30 seconds?

What is "100% crops are included" and how to do it or adjust it?

Would try them this weekend if I have time..

most of the time when you shoot at the maximum resolution, the file size would be so big that it may take people very long to download the image, so naturally, you would resize it to make it smaller to, say, 640x425 and post that up. But by doing that we won't be able to tell the quality of the image when it's blown up to its full resolution.

So a 100% crop is essentially cropping a portion, say 640x425 of the full sized image without doing any resizing. Usually you would choose a portion of the image where there are details. In the case of lens tests (shot at infinity), it is common to post the crop from the centre and another taken from the corner.

I think I need to get a tuitor......

How to shot at infinity, lens only 18-200mm???

Any Auto options? Set everything to auto to test?

Let me correct myself.. You focus at something far far away.

What is the aperture for this lens ?
Is it 18-200mm f3.5-6.2 or 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 or 18-200mm f3.5-5.6

The page at sigma website shows all the above 3 apertures . There is even a "18-200mm f2.8 DC OS HSM" at the right hand side, below the lens photo.

On my Sigma Lens state 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS , maybe I got an old stock :(
Maybe the new one is 6.2 and f2.8.

You call try calling Sigma Singapore and let us know.

@coolride

how's the sigma lens? do you experience "lens creep" like with the Nikon?

I have used the Sigma 18-200 (non-OS) on my Canon body as well as the Nikon 18-200 VR. In the first few months there is little lens creep but after 1 year the whole lens feels loose with the EX finish peeling. My nikon 18-200 also loosened up after about 8,000 shots but it is better designed as in at its extremes (18mm and 200mm) there is resistance built into the design, so it does not creep so easily.

The 18-200 OS is impressive in its zoom range, sharpness and OS. Having compared the VR and OS, I think the VR performs a tad better. I could hardly get a sharp shot at 1/20 with the OS at 200mm but I could get a number of good shots at 1/15 with the VR. Since $800 is not a small sum of money anyway, I chose the VR. :)

Another satisfied customer of Nikon 18-200mm VR
