decided to get this lens and went to the shop to try it. sad day though.
i tried one copy on my camera and tried autofocusing from 17 going up to 70. it was fine until say 60 to 65 but when i reached 70 i cannot do autofocus and i asked the attendant to look at it. it just went searching and searching, and when it stops searching the image is blur. the store attendant agreed with me and gave me a new copy but with the same result. thought my camera was acting strange, tried one of their lenses and it was fine. they tried the 17-70 on a different body from their store and it was the same problem.
2 lenses behaving the same. any chance this is a product glitch and every copy has it?

I don't think every copy has this problem. Could be only a certain batch only. Maybe can try from another shop. But Sigma's QC is quite erratic at times.

I got mine from OP at 750 cash. Haven't played with it yet but I got a good copy compared to those I tried at another shop.
