Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Hi, this lens was given to me and I am just a novice photographer. No idea if it's the lens or me but the pictures taken with this camera isn't as sharp, clear and brilliant as all the sample photos online. May I know how can I verify if I got a bad copy? I don't have any friends who are experts on this so I am relying on the advices given here.

Hi, make sure you have a proper technique of shooting. Improper technique makes unsharp photos. Research also on the internet how to test for the lens sharpness. Youtube have some tutorials. I just got this lens I think two weeks ago, bought in SLRRevo for my Nikon D7000 and it is also not sharp, especially at 17mm f2.8. I sent it in Sigma Service Centre this morning for calibration, and I got it back at 3pm. Now it's tack sharp (at least for me) in all focal lengths even at f2.8.

Thank you! Basically, I have no problems taking decent, sharp pics. All my travel pics are acceptable to me previously using the kit lens. But with this new lens that was supposedly a better and expensive present from my hubby, my entire Italy trip was just so-so rather than the usual, if not better... I think I better bring it back to Sigma to have a check. Thanks a lot for your reply!

Now that is bad... you should have brought along your kit lens in Italy... anyways that's the cost of buying (in your case a gift) a third party lens ... it's really troublesome to take a leave from work just to have your lens check or calibrated with your camera, but it's really worth it. I knew it before I bought this lens, that sigma has some issues in their AF or pictures taken with sigma lens are soft or something.... good luck then...

My sigma 17-50mm(nikon) , no matter u turn ON / OFF the os. Exif there the VR only show ON .

Even u turn OFF the os , exif still show vr is ON .

Anyone noticed ?

I noticed this one too. Even when you shoot with OS off, View NX (of Nikon) in EXIF data shows your VR is ON.... I think this is not a big deal to me.... I was at the sigma service centre yesterday for my calibration with my D7k, I ask them this but they cannot answer. They just told me they ask Sigma Japan about this and they are waiting for the reply. The Sigma Singapore receptionist (the auntie) told me they will call me if they have the answer.

Hi..new owner of this lens. Got it as a gift from my hubby. I have been testing this lens indoor and could not have a sharp image for 2.8. So far no back or front focusing problem. How do you check if the lens is sharp?

I also bought mine some months ago, out of the box I also could not have sharp images. I did some quick AF test (if it's suffering from front/back focusing), I learned from this forum I can send it to calibrate (under sigma warranty) for free in Sigma service centre. Now after calibration, it takes sharp images. If you already tested it, and does not suffer from back & front focusing, you might want to consider to visit sigma service centre for servicing.

Looks like it..
Im going for my holiday soon..hope I can get back the lens on that same day if I am sendinh for calibration

Yes you can get your camera the same day. I got mine after 4 hours I think, when I sent mine. It may depend of course on the workload of the technician in charge.

Wah! 4hrs! Thought of just taking half day leave....hmm..now must plan to go somewhere while waiting......Called them this morning, appointment made for Thursday. Hope my lenswill be sharp after the calibration.

Anyway,thanks lightyear2011 for the info.

You're welcome. The technician will show you before and after photo taken with your combo (camera and lens) in his computer. You will know at least something has been done on it. Me, I didn't bother to look the before & after result because I have to run. I just tested it on my way outside, and I did see big improvements on sharpness.

Dun need to wait. Call to arrange for sending in. Then send in. Then pick up on another day when ready.:p

this new lens is 1000+ which is about the same price as canon 17-55 bought from technogadgets, will getting the canon be better since you will be paying about the same price?

If given the choice again (if same price), I would have gone down with 17-55 instead. *If this is what you want to hear*

You got quite abit of stuffs on your wishlist...try to spend on what you need and not what you want. It should go down quite nicely with 70-200.

btw, if you are getting the sigma 17-50 from techno, it cost ~7-800+. So in short, sigma is still cheaper.

Ya..because I decided to get the 7d first and save up for the is mk2.so I need to get a lens for my usuage.now looking at a few options.i am also thinking if third party 70-200 version is worth it.jus expkoring my options before I get it next week.

Not to really OT too much, but if you need more time to think it thru, just take your time.

I suppose you are getting the 7D body only. Then getting another lens to go along with it. If facing the similar situation, I would likely go for 2nd hand 7D (or grey sets, since the price ard the same) + 2nd hand 17-55 instead.

sorry but may i know why 17-55 instead of sigma 17-50? since 17-55 second hand and a sigma 17-50 cost around the same and sigma still has the warranty?

The main reason being focusing speed and focus consistency/accuracy. (I have only tested my friend's 17-55 about a week)
focusing speed - Canon's USM is faster than Sigma's HSM, not faster by alot but noticeable.
focus consistency/accuracy - Under quite extreme low light (imagine a subject lit by only a single distant street lamp), Canon's focusing is more reliable than Sigma. Thou I don't shoot alot under these conditions, but it's irritating when you encounter such situation. When I do encounter these situation, it's during casual events like BBQ where lighting can be very poor.

Some other "non-critical" reasons, I kinda prefer Canon's color over Sigma's color... Thou I do know many who would say otherwise. But this is my preference lar. It's non critical to me, as colors can be adjusted during PP provided that you spend the time (sometimes alot of time) to adjust it to your liking.

Warranty - ya, this is one of those things I got cared about about too when I got my Sigma 17-50. But please do note that if your lens by any chance needs servicing, please be prepared to take leave to go down SSC (Sigma Singapore • Contact), since they only open on Weekdays (Mon-Fri 9am-6pm). CSC at least opens 1/2 day on Saturday...

If you are getting a grey set or 2nd hand, there's always a risk factor. So, you will have to make the call to see if compromise is worth the amount difference. So what I'm talking about is: lens performance vs cost vs warranty service. Balance it out and you will know which one is more suitable for you.

But, since I've already bought the Sigma 17-50, I have no wish to get the 17-55, since it's still quite a good lens, but IMO just not as good as the Canon's one (In short "You get what you pay for"), but I can live with the above mentioned "defects" since, those are not really the limiting factor of the outcome of the shot.

I'm thinking of getting this lens, but I already got 18-135mm STM lens.
Is this lens worth to get as compared to my kit lens?

Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

Why do you want to upgrade from your current?
