Sigma 17-50 EX DC HSM OS!!

now the Canon mounts are hitting the shelves, according to DP review..
hoping to see the Nikon mounts very soon :D
price is a little steep though..

i tried at orient photo the other day. am very impressed by the sharpness, colour reproduction and smooth auto focusing of the lens. would get this over canon's 17-55mm after comparing my cousin's copy.

Any idea how this new lens compare to the tamron 17-50 non-vc in terms of sharpness and other picture quality??

how does it compare to the Canon copy in terms of size & weight?

hmm i cant say anything accurate because i didnt compare them side by side. but the weight wasnt too hefty. felt comfortable on a 450d with grip. but 77mm filter =/

so this really costs in excess of $1k?

1130 from orient photo. still 400 + cheaper than the canon offering. and in my books, a good deal anyway

Personally I think Sigma set the price too high for this new 17-50mm. Will rather save abit longer to get the Canon 17-55mm in this case, the Canon lens is a real stellar performer, I was using it before.

but u save 400 + wor... that's a lot of $$ isn't it? :)

The price quoted was from Orient foto (they are well stocked but their prices are not known to be cheap), other shop may be cheaper. The Canon holds it value better too should you need to sell it in future.

might as well get a second hand 17-55 canon.

maybe your cousin's copy is a lemon? according to the reviews, canon's 17-55 is still better than the sigma version in sharpness and in AF. But the price, not as good at sigma's.

Hi all,

Just got this lens from MS colour, 1099 cash.

It is expensive for a third party lens, but i must say - this lens is outstanding. truly outstanding and a very worthy competitor to the canon 17-55. I tried 2 copies, the first was a bad copy with AF issues, so i gave it a miss and asked for a second copy.

the second copy was perfect. everything about the lens is near perfect. this thing is SHARP from edge to edge at maximum aperture at all focal lengths, and when stop down at f4 it is EXCELLENT edge to edge. distortion is present but easily correctable and minor. so is vignetting. I can say the new fld glass really works, abberations, while present at the extreme corners at 17mm, is very negligible and well controlled. build quality is better than the canon and very solid. no barrel wobbling. the hood is nice, the size is compact and the lens is light enough.

this is as close as you'll get to a perfect fast lens for aps-c SLRs. It is that good. And guess what, it is affordable! way to go sigma. two thumbs up!:thumbsup:
