thanks alot for the sample pictures calebk! i'm leaning towards the sigma 10-20mm now! haha..hope i can find a good copy cos i heard sigma's quality varies alot. true?

Yes that is quite true. That said, when I was purchasing my Sigma, both copies I tested (at John 3:16) were sharp, so I was choosing between sharp and sharper. You may not have such a good stroke of luck though. Haha.

Hi, thats very nics pics...

btw, what sort of filters do you guys use for sigma 10-20mm? am choosing betweeb hoya n b+w but b+w is expensive..is there abig difference in quality?

heard the filter gotto be thin otherwise will affect the photos as well..true?

hi calebk how much u got ur 10-20mm?

I don't think that's very true. Some will say it is, though, but personally I've not experienced any hard vignetting with a normal filter on.

I used a Hoya HMC UV guard on this lens. This filter is of normal thickness; it is not a slim filter. It was more than sufficient protection and I felt it didn't affect optical performance significantly, so that is a filter to consider if you are on a tight budget.

I got mine from John 3:16 at S$890 nett.

Thanks for the pictures! They're really nice. Im glad you posted those pictures up as I think many have a conception that Sigma 10-20 has bad barrel distortion.

A good place to check for more photos from each lens would be the respective Flickr groups.

I think the common misconception is mistaking perspective distortion for barrel distortion. Such is a inherent trait of any wide angle lens. :)

May I ask what is the difference between perspective distortion and barrel distortion?

Perspective distortion is what you get to squeeze in the whole thing into the picture.

Imagine you stand at the end of a memorial wall and use an ultra-wide to get the whole wall in. Your wall would be filling one edge (say left) of the photo and the other end would appear very far. But the top of the wall should be a straight line sloping from your left edge to the other end.

A photo without perspective distortion would be taken by say 35mm (DX format) at the same location - you will see the top wall sloping more gently. But you don't get the whole wall.

Some say you take in a lot more with ultrawide, others say it makes the depth more pronounce (exactly the opposite of telephoto effect - compression of perspective).

Barrel (and pinchcushion distortion) comes about due to geometry of the lens with curve surfaces. If not adequately corrected will turn a straight line (at the top of photo) into a convex curve (barrel) or concave curve (pinchcushion). Take any compact, set at the widest focal length, and photograph a brick wall you will see. Lines in the centre stay straight, top and bottom will most likely form a "barrel" curving upwards in the top centre and curving downwards in the bottom centre - like a beer barrel.

BTW I am a Sigma 10-20 user - there is virtually no barrel distortion with this lens. Some reviews say this lens control distortion better than the Nikon 12-24.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Really clears my mind.

CHeers!

wow, lots of info here. :D

Speaking of filters for ultra wides, was wondering if anyone use a cpl on their's often?

Great info bro.

Any one tried the Tokina 11-16 f2.8? How is the Barrel distortion compared?

Thanks :)

Most ppl uses ultra wide lenses for landscapes/architecture shots which has skys or reflections(water/glass) on their photos. I'd use a CPL on my wide lenses to make blue sky more saturated and reduce the glare on surfaces :)

I haven't tried this lense myself personally, but from most review that i've read, there is abit of barrel disortion at the wide end(about 1.5-2%), but almost no distortion when u get to 13-16mm.

Some reviews had said that Sigma 10-20mm has more barrel distortion at the wide end(about 3%) and pincushion distortion at the longer end.

Both lense are based on reviews.

Hope it helps.

I got the chance to try this on both Canon and Nikon crop bodies. At 11-13mm, there is some noticeable barrel distortions. As compared earlier to the 10-20, the Sigma has almost no noticeable barrel distortions.

In real life usage, the Sigma shows up with less barrel distortion than all the other third party competitors, simply because Sigma's UWA development is way ahead of the pack. Look at their full-frame compatible 12-24 - an amazing lens with superb low barrel distortions.

I've since sold my 10-20 as I am no longer on a APS-C body, and I do miss the wonderful distortion handling on this lens. It is really second to none (except maybe Nikkor UWAs).

how abt tamron 10-24mm lens?

Its not yet release, heard that it will be release only end of this month in japan. Therefore we had to wait for a few months before it reaches our shores. Meanwhile i can read more reviews next month when some ppl test it :D

Is Sigma 12-24mm the only available len for Full Frame?
I am trying to maximise the len because I am currently using crop camera but chances are would be upgrading to a FF.
