Shutter-release button sometimes don't work. Malfunction?

I'm using a Nikon D5000. Sometimes when I use the Auto Mode and press the shutter-release button, the camera doesn't snap a picture. Is it because I'm too near to the subject of photo and the camera somehow knows that it isn't going to give me a good picture or is this a malfunction that I should be concerned of?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You are probably in Autofocus mode. If the camera cannot get a focus lock because, subject is too close, or light is too dark, it will not allow you to fire off a shot. switch to MF mode and you will be able to snap right away.
