Shutter Lag..

they seem to be dependent on the type of focusing... pre focus or manual focus... because the numbers are different.

how is this so? my point is that shutter lag is a delay between the time you press the button to the time the shutter releases... it should not be different from case to case...

is there something that i am not aware of?

Not sure why pre focus and manual have different timings on some cameras (the D2h looks like it has the same lag) - must be the camera controller chips are doing something different for the af pre-focus and manual focus, I find it curious that af pre-focus is faster than manual focus.

Don't simply discount test results based on intuition.

From my own deduction, the lag (less AF time) is due to both hardware (mechnical movement of the mirror/opening of shutter blades, etc) and "software" (computation of exposure based on the metering used, determination of white balance, flash exposure, etc). When you prefocus, the camera already have a chance to do the software part and when you press fully down, what's left is mainly the hardware part. For manual focus, the software portion is only done after the shutter is depressed, hence the lag is generally longer. Every camera does it differently for the software part (e.g. some computation could be done post capture) and does it at different speed, hence the big difference in the numbers.

To complicate matters, take a look at the timings for D70 at www.imaging-resource.com . Different flash modes affect the shutter lags.

For more details, I guess you could talk to camera designers/engineers.
