Finally, there’s a way to check shutter count on your Canon EOS digital SLR. However, the shutter count information is available *only* on Canon DIGIC III/IV DSLRs *except* the 1D* series and 500D

I've updated my Tech page to include link to download the App for Windows and Mac users. It's as simple as connecting your camera to your computer via USB cable and running the application. For more info, visit the author's home page. It feels good to be able to determine the shutter count of a used body you plan to purchase and not having send to Canon for that bit of info.:thumbsup:

so no 500D software to check on the shutter count?;)

i tried this too, but cant find where to lookout for no of shutter counts.. Can pls advice??
works for me. you have to use a RAW file. the amount of info obtained is WOW...

erm...but this tool has been around for years.

A easier way is to use this....no installation required and it works with 1 series camera

Does this method provide an accurate shutter count? i always tot it only provided the exif info. Doesn't that only provide the file number instead of the shutter count, can confirm this?

provides shutter count and a whole lot other information

I tried both jpeg and raw versions but both i dun see any shutter count or actuation info. Only possible related info is the file number but file number is not shutter count leh...

i tried astro jargon and kept getting the error message saying "error retrieving shutter count".

any other alternative means to check without going down to CSC?

i used a RAW file, and there was a section which stated "Shutter Count: XXXXX"

in 550d, i notice there is information like 100-xxx
100 = iso
xxx = i believe it's shutter count

1st post here.

on a 550D photo, I noticed this "xxx" number will show up on "File Index" as well

I verified that this number incremented, by comparing 2 consecutively taken photos.

So IMO, File Index = Shutter Count

No. Never ever trust or even consider the file index.
The file index can be reset in the camera. Secondly, depending on a different setting, the file index will adjusted automatically a) to continue from any existing file index number in the most current folder; or b) to start from zero when there is an emtpy card detected 9without any images stored on it). These two settings can be adjusted in the camera menu, your manual has the details.
The best way for on the spot checks (e.g. when checking a 2nd hand unit) is still to get the EOSInfo tool on a laptop and examine a freshly taken image. This way, also other aspects of the image can be checked if required.

Depending on the settings on the camera, The file index that you are referring to likely will go back to 101\XXX_0001 after 100\XXX_9999 OR resets with every empty card. So like Octarine said, it's not accurate.

Not critical nowadays. New models coming out fast. Today just saw my friend dump his 7D. New 7D2 coming out.
The digislr will become obsolete long before the shutter count reaches 1/10th of theoretical maximum limit.

He dumped his 7D? He'll be waiting at least 6 months before the 7D2!

Actually he immediately bought a 5D Mk3 after that. The rumored Canon 3D with 46 megapixels is hotter than 7D Mk2.

LOL! I hope the Canon 3D (or whatever it's going to be called) with 46 mps comes true sooner than later.

IIRC it's Windows only because it supposedly runs on ActiveX.

Thanks to Janshim and all contributors of various software/freeware that can do shutter count.

If you need to know, ask the shop to do a check for you.

Some have the software and can show you right away before you buy the camera.

I did not bother. Just asked is it a new set. Based on trust.

Very useful app! Thanks so much for sharing!
