All the camera you could ever need!

Review: I took a few shots today with my Zeiss Ikon whilst shopping with the wife. The big VF. The big VF. The big VF. It alone is makes this camera worth the choice. I wear spectacles and the VF hole is so big i can see lots of room even outside the 35mm framelines. The other noticeable advantage is the RF overlap 'bite' point for the focus is easier to find coz the RF patch is longer than leica's.

I do not understand internet comments which say the ZI is not as well made. I think build quality is excellent. The buttons, machinery, and design all ooze quality. For example, the AE switch which is under the hotshoe is actually located precisely where your thumb would be for easy usage of AE lock. From the placement of the AE lock, can see alot of thought went into the architecture. The bottom plate has 2 cylinders that stick out so you are less likely to scratch the bottom plate unlike the leica. The key build difference is the ZI body is made of magnesium not brass, so it weighs lighter than leica. But although lighter it still feels very solid and robust. It does not feel cheap. Leica feels like a heavy slab by comparison. Dont get me wrong, im not dissing leica - just saying leica is heavy and feels expensive in a collector's item sort of way. But the ZI feels, not as collector item, but as a camera to be used.

I found it hard to get used to hinge cover loading. I wonder why internet comments say this feature of ZI is good, and criticise leica for remaining with bottom loading design. I actually prefer bottom loading of leica. I find it difficult to insert the film into the ZI sprocket. But it seems nobody on internet has ever mentioned this, so i guess i must be closet noob again here. Why does most ppl prefer a hinge door at the back?

I never switch off the power. I read on internet the batteries last a year.

I noticed the ZI does not have self timer. Oh well.

I can understand internet comments which say the light meter is hard to see. Actually its not literally 'hard to see', its just that in order to see the meter reading, your eyeball needs to roll to your left away from the RF patch - ie you cannot see the reading from the corner of your eyeball, in order to see the reading your eyeball must actually move. that means your attention is taken off the RF focusing patch when you check the
meter.

One really cute thing: the back hinge door has got a small window which displays the side of the film cannister at the part with the name of the film you are using. Im surprised such a charming feature is not found on ZI reviews. I really did not know film cannisters display the names at the same place.

The shutter curtain is made of metal. It is much louder than leica cloth shutter. This is a disadvantage for me. I wonder why cosina use metal to make shutter - does a metal shutter last longer?

Ive been using manual exposure for so long that AE feels like PnS! I'm so quick to shoot now haha...

The most difficult part in buying this canera is to decide which color - black or silver. Both look really nice.

I am going to use duct tape to cover up the 'Zeiss Ikon' in front - it will look like MP hur hur

I think loading, be it rear or bottom, is a matter of taste to an extent. I started out with the Bessa, so I am cool with loading from the back. Just put the roll in, press down the rewind button to lock the roll in, and then pull and then insert in the slot with some force and you are done.

Did you buy new or used?

Actually this is quite standard on most film slr as well as compact cameras whereas Leica's bottom loading is not quite errrh.... the norm

This is something that needs getting used to, especially when you're planning to shoot your lens wide open!

Loud as it may sound, the metal curtain is just like my Canon P... you won't ever have to worry about burning a hole in the (cloth) shutter, though the Canon P's metal shutter is quite prone to wringle, i think Cosina did a relatively good job on the ZI's curtain!

Sigh...... that's the hardest part really... limited Silver or black paint!!!

MY hole is bigger than yours

Not shifu lah bro... like I said, a black ZI without the grip is incomplete! Its a stunner now!

Thanks to newghost i discovered my Ikon came from adorama without a rubber covering at the back of the VF. I cannot be bothered to return to adorama, so i bought a cosina diopter-2 from chiif the optician. I tried both -2 and -3. the diopter has a rubber covering

The -3 was abit giddy, but -2 make the VF very sharp!

For those of us who find the VF abit blur, suggest u try diopter it can make a big difference!

Using the diopter (-3 or -2) allows me to see the meter LED a bit more clearly actually.

Hi bro newghost, can i ask you about your canon p...how do u find it, in terms of user aspects compared to maybe Leica?

For me personally, the VF on the ZI is everything. The only other VF i fancy is the Bessa R3 series (can focus with both eyes open at once).

I place great importance on VF, so i find it hard to go back to leica body. Leica body is heavier, looks abit nicer, cloth shutter more quiet, but VF not as nice (except M3). Big bright VF is of utmost importance so i can focus and compose fast.

I was delibrating between a M6 and a ZI back then, and the VF was the main reason why I chose the ZI.

Apart from the ZI, I think the Bessa R4 (A or M) also has very bright VF, and especially good for spectacled users.

With my M4, the advance movement is buttery smooth and the shutter click is music to the ears :)
With my canon P, its rugged, 35/50 framelines visible throughout, viewfinder is surprisingly bright (relatively) and 1:1
They both get the job done bro, though I tend to have less stress in terms of equipment handling when using the P :bsmilie:

The Bessa R is super bright too... You need to try it if you haven't already!!!  :p

Just got this cute little Zeiss Sonnar 50 f1.5 in S (Nikon RF) Mount. Comes with an Amedeo adaptor that's really well-made and already 6 bit coded as a 50 f1.4 Lux. The lens is in as-new condition, so is the adaptor.

Great buy!!! Love the size compared to the Zeiss ZM lens. The built is also very solid. Love it!!!
