Should I still get 35L1.4 though i have 16-35L

Actually within the 16-35 range, 24-35 can most often be used for shooting family.
The 16-20 range takes a little getting used to, but its main use is for landscapes.

The 35 is great for isolating a subject and melting away the background.

Maybe you will regret selling 16-35mm but again it depend on individual, if you have money to spare keep 16-35 and add 35L in your arsenal.
For me i tried fixed length but end up selling every time to go back to zoom (cannot keep up with kids running around :P).

Dam @Kenneth67C, are you a pro photographer? I just saw your gear list and you have tons on lens there.

No lah...just a keen amateur. ;)
and I'm still thinking of getting more...but slow down a bit.

TS I have a 35L and 5d2...and on the contrary to you selling the 24-70, i am now thinking to get that or 135L(used to have it)....due to work and family...barely have time to explore the hobby....

35L is a nice lens to use and light..so is the 135L..can i ask why do you want to sell the 24-70? is quite a versatile lens right?

Hi iMac, as i mentioned earlier, im crazy over the sharpness and bokeh of prime lens. After using 135L, it has convinced to move into prime. 24-70 is very good lens and versatile but its getting heavy and im feeling the pain whenever i travel with it. But the 35L is quite an expensive lens and my 16-35L is sitting in my drybox resting for long time. I need to balance between love and $$$, so i sell off my 24-70mm.

sweet 135L! i simply love this lens. sold my 24-105 to get it. now im holding 50mm f1.4 (no red ring but cheap alternative ATM)
im planning to get a uwa for landscape n stuffs.

TS, i grew to love prime ever since i used 50mm f1.8 on a cropped lens and i actually notice myself either leaving my lens either at min zoom range or max zoom range. so i decided to just get the primes. I think it should be quite good to work around with primes. Im on a 5dmkii as well. but 135 for family portrait unless outdoor otherwise its quite tight. before u get the 35mm u should try getting a 2nd hand 50mm 1.4 to try out also. honestly its quite good imo.

Hi, i actually had a 50f1.4 but again i sold off. I like the lens but the focus mechanism is a concern. I changed once and everytime i use, i need to be very careful as u dont know when it will break again. Also i find that its not wide enough to be an all rounder but 35mm should be good.

Also i find that its not wide enough to be an all rounder but 35mm should be good.

that's the reason why i never like 50mm on my ff cam. its neither here or there, 35mm is just nice.

Actually I think it really does vary from photographer to photographer - for me 50mm (on FF) is like an extension of my peripheral vision but 35mm....not as comfortable.

yeah, it really varies, and i found that in this forum, those who like 35mm like me, will not like 50mm and vice versa :p

lol!!!!! how about those that like both the 35mm n 50mm? Do they like u?

anyway, i duno about how much i like the 50mm. sometimes i do sometimes i dont.
sometimes the angle is too tight but sometimes i think its just right. so im assuming if i mount the 35mm, i will get both the same problems right? soooo bbb u need both 35mm and 50mm! :P

actually i my collection is now...

35mm, 50mm (i buy and sell.... still cannot find a suitable MF 50mm that suits me, recently just acquired a Yashica 50mm f1.4 contax mount), 135mm, 200mm (olympus lens).

thinking now to sell my one and only zoom lens, 17-40mm and upgrade to a carl zeiss 21mm f2.8 :x

On a similar note, wil keep my 17-40 for convenience when travelling and top up with 35L for creative and low light shots.
Of course, the 21/2.8 ZE would be nice for dedicated landscapes

For primes, if too tight just move back. Too wide, move in or crop.

I'm still debating on whether to get the 50L, or get an iMac. I need both...lol

yea.. but some places u have nowhere to move already haha

iam also considering going into primes.
but for your case,i suggest you sell off the 16-35 and get the 35L.
if u need UWA next time,get the 14mm L.

The qn of whether to get 35L when u already have 16-35 is similar to the qn of whether to buy a rolex when u already have a casio g-shock. They are both different classes for different needs.. Somemore 16-35 is soooo SLOW at f2.8, u definitely need at least f1.4 for night street shots.. F2.8 is just too slow and just doesnt cut it... The only thing good is that its wide and zoom. So buy ur rolex, the 35L!!! No matter how functional (zoom + f2.8) a casio is, it will never give as much face (ultra usefulness of f1.4) as a rolex!

Hi Turbonetics, i find that 16mm already some curving/distortion on the side thus its difficult to compose. If 14mm, i will be lost.

Hi devilry, now u give me a choice.. maybe i should save the money to invest on a rolex..;)
i agree with u on the f1.4, its really useful for low light situation. i think the urge of getting 35Lf1.4 is getting really strong.

Actually the distortion of the 16-35 is bearable and quite ok.. whereas the distortion on 17-40 is horrendous & bad... 14mm L is surprisingly ok with the distortion (it better be as it cost $3k+!!!)
