Should I sell my D80 for a D90

IMO.. it's not really viable to buy a D90 now or in the future if you're holding a D80.. in fact the prices of Camera bodies always drop quite quickly.. In the short run you might feel great about having a D90 which has better tech specs than D80, but in the long run, as the value drops, you'll feel the same way as the time when you're holding that D80 u once had. So I suggest, be patient.. go for something that's better like D300 or even D700. D80 is still a good camera as of now.

I agree with most views given.. there isn't a lot of diff between D80 or D90, or alot to some. If you are a serious shooter, consider D300 or higher model. As for me, I'm just a casual shooter, D70 and DX format works fine with me. Ultimately, the decision lies with you. Happy shooting. :)

Well, just sold my 6 month old D80 for a D90. Loving it! Was waiting for the D90 from the beginning of the year, but it took too long, so got the D80 then.

I started off with video before doing to still camera. So it's great to have both! :)

So now the view is, saved money on getting the D300, and got video. :P

I am also a D80 user, and I'm also quite in a dilemma whether to sell my low shutter count (3k plus) D80 for the D90.

The main attraction for the upgrade is the technical image superiority, similar to the D3 / D300. Liveview / movie-mode aren't my main concerns...

Based on merely image superiority over D80, do you think I should upgrade to D90?

I would say a partial yes.
D90 being a Gen2 camera, it offers better noise control and from what I see, colour reproduction seems to be very faithful too. Metering is much more accurate than D80. (D80 is plagued with overexpose metering)

But note, image superiority in terms of colour, constrast, sharpness, is determined more by the lens you use, not so much on body.

For those who owned both what's your opinion on:

1. Usable ISO for both D80 and D90?

2. Colors produced between the CCD of D80 and CMOS of D90?

3. Battery life compared between the D80 & D90?

4. Focussing speed?

I'm trying to convince myself to upgrade to D90 instead of D300 as I find the D300 too big for my hands and I've got SD cards already. Of course the 3D tracking of 51 focussing points of D300 is much better but how often would we use that?

BTW, any thoughts on say just selling the BO of D80 to keep the 18-135mm for the D90 or future use? Is 18-135mm comparable to the 18-105mm VR?

Hi vajrasattva, this is exactly what I did. I sold my D80 body yesterday and keep the 18-135mm lens for my next camera. Btw, D90 body w/o kit lens is available for below $1500.00:thumbsup:

My colleagues bought one, we tested it.

1. Usable ISO for both D80 and D90? ISO3200 for D90 is still good!

2. Colors produced between the CCD of D80 and CMOS of D90? No much different, but produced good background blur.

3. Battery life compared between the D80 & D90? Dunno know.

4. Focussing speed? Faster than D80:thumbsup:

2. Colors produced between the CCD of D80 and CMOS of D90? No much different, but produced good background blur.

How's that? Any sample images to show the difference?

We viewed the pics on the LCD screen, so maybe I can't tell the differences. As for the blur background, it would be the Tamron lens my friend was using that day.

Btw, I love the bigger 3" LCD screen

For me i don't think it worth to buy the body only for D90 if its in the range of 1450 - 1500 as the kit cost only 1650 and i've been going around here can see the lens in the kit package being sold around 375$ +/- so it better to get the kit then sell the lens if you don't need it

I took some 850 shots jpeg (L) last weekend. 2 bar left on the battery. This includes a 5 min shoot of video, and lots of time scrolling through the menu to fiddle with the setting, trying out the editing software.

My estimate is 1000 shot minimum.

Can someone comment on the D80.

:D

I like the idea. Thank you GuessBoy.

Got a D80 last year, lens 18-135mm, well kept in dry cabinet. I think warranty is out. Thinking of selling the kit for a D90 Nikon. Wondering if this is a good upgrade.

What kind of price should I be selling D80 kit to be realistic, and is there any trade in for a D90?

One shop in Chinatown selling D90 kit(18-105 VR) for $1600, before negotiation. Good bargain?

If you are thinking of changing to d90 then would you say that if I haven't bought one yet, I should be getting D90 and not D80?

Good for you! I have to look at the shuttle count. I think I hit only 3K. Really under use.
