Should i go for Canon or Nikon

might as well buy all the other brands also. lol
hmmn, newbie's input here..
yeah, I believe both brands are great, have a wide range of lenses, accs...etc..etc..
but as what others are saying here you can try both first..to feel it, check the ergonomics,
functionality, features...blah blah blah..however, you can also try other brands..who knows
instead of C & N, you may like Pentax, Olympus or Sony.
This will also depends of what is your main purpose of buying a DSLR - hobby, business..?
..and of course your budget..
The most important thing is.. and as what other ppl said..it's not your C with L, or N with VR, or S with CZ lens but it is whether you have the passion(and u can sustain it) to capture the precious moments & beauty of the world..(naaks).
I use S cos I dun have much budget and currently using Kit lens and a normal tele BUT I can still achieve what I want...well hobby that is..with satisfaction of course
...functionality? not bad with built-in Steadyshot so even my kit lens can tahan, sensor..same as N...blah.blah..(well sorry but I'm not promoting S...:bsmilie
So it's Saturday and you can burn the whole day to try, try and try...have a nice day!

Few years back, I would choose Canon system becos their they have better noise control and longer lens with IS.
Now if you ask me again, its could be Nikon D3 with 600mm VR lens if I could start all over again.
If you have not noticed, its all up to individual as each of us have different requirements and some may not even use ISO 200 and above while some die die must use ISO 640 and above.
Using the same system as your friend may or may not be a good idea. Reason is nowadays, seldom ppl want to lend you their gears esp to newbies. on the other hand, it wil be easier to learn from your friend if you have the same system.

Between the lower to mid end of both brands, I dun think there are much differentiating factors. However, in the higher end, the market becomes more niche and there are many different school of thoughts.
I am a Canon 5D user but do not have brand loyalty (I pay for the camera, not that they pay me to use it!) But I am very impressed with the latest offerings from Nikon. Given a chance (and money of course) to start a new system again, I'll go for the nikon D3 too. Their ISO can be upped by 2 more stops that Canon's best and their noise is kicking canon's ass. Their latest 14-24mm F2.8 is a marvel too. Sorry I am not starting a flaming, I am just expressing my marvel for a great product. (I am a Canon user!!!)
But I'm sure Canon will catch up too (maybe many D3s are being dissected now for Canon's R & D). Dun think the Giant will keep it lying down. It may happen sooner than expected! Hopefully when I am in the market for a replacement camera, Canon has come out with similar offerings.
So if you are choosing the mid end cameras, suggest that you have a feel of the camera and go with your heart.

Actually this is where you're wrong... The low end to mid end is where the market competition is strongest. This is where they decide on how much they can earn from the masses. Amongst the few brands out there, all of them are hitting hard on this slice of the pie, which is why there are so many new models like the Canon 400D or the Nikon D40X. Though you may say they are largely the same, many reviews have made their mark on this market and have certainly contributed to some choices which are now more popular than the others.
Nikon and Canon both are OK.
Sony, lens and accessories expensive.
Just came back from Japan, realised that 90% of DSLRs I saw during the 7 days trip (used by tourist and Japanese) are Nikons.
Saw a few Nikon D3s too (used by Japanese retirees in a park in Oasaka doing some bird shoot).

Okay i have something to add with respect to brandings, prices and just specifications alone.
Olympus
The E-410 and 510 offered at the S$1k++ range with promotion going on. Check out the dual kit lenses offer of 14-42mm and 40-150mm.
Panaonic
DSLR seems rather expensive way past the S$1k range.
Sony
The A100k offered at around S$1k++ or lower with kit lens 18-70mm. I am not sure about the quality of this kit lens but there are always people to ask around and reviews to digest. The higher end Sony and Carl Zeiss lenses costs more.
Nikon
Check out the D40 with kit lens 18-55mm at around S$1k or less. Bargain City might be packing this one in with freebies and a second battery.
Canon
Now a rivalry to the D40 in terms of price is the 350D with the 18-55mm lens a plus freebies and warranty.
Pentax
The K100D super should fit the bill. You can go with the kit lens 18-55mm and upgrade with more lenses from Pentax, Sigma and Tamron later on. I am not sure about the price and freebies though but it should also fall in the S$1k++/-- range.
Do some reading on the lenses and bodies reviews and try out at the stores or from your friends who owned any of them before making the decision. Once bought just shoot. Its not about the beginning nor the end. It the process of learning that's fun about taking photos.

both are alright. could have gone with either brand (chose Canon cos they're the first to come out with a sub$2k lightweight DSLR) and be happy abt the product offerings. can consider Olympus, Sony and Pentax too. In-body stabilsation is something absent from Canon and Nikon bodies.
I agree with this.
Nikon has being good in optics, but slower in electronics, so Canon pick up the market share. However, if someone plan just to stay at entrance level equipment, I think Canon has better entrance model.
In fact there are so many other good brands, not only this 2, unless you're going for top model in future.
I would say Sony is the new star. Inherited from Minolta, the creator of AF, TTL and many other foundation systems today, and with good resources and now serious in DSLR market. You can consider.
Sony lenses can be relatively expensive, CZ lens is top class, minolta lens is cheaper everywhere, so you can go high or low, still with at least basic quality.
