Should I get a Nikon DSLR or just a semi pro?

There is a "steep" learning curve to surmount, when coming from a P/S. But a little effort will go a long way to mastering the basic controls.

welcome to the world of DSLR!
I just got my d5100 a month ago and bought my 50mm 1.8G yesterday. Loving the bokeh!

I also recommend you to get either the 35 F1.8 of the 50 F1.8 AFS for potrait shots.

haha..with the screen you can lesser the need to lie on the floor to take low elevation shots of your dogs.

for small size dogs with cropped sensor, 85mm may be a better choice. But again it depends very much on her dogs behaviour.

85mm on a crop is really tight.. esp indoors. will have to stand really far to get the dog's shot.

Both 85mm and 50mm is too tight. Even if it's small dogs, they run fast. They might go out of the frame. 35mm works well enough, unless TS wants to capture the dog's nose, the 40mm micro is not a bad choice too.

ya, i shoot in outdoor or indoor with large area for me to move about for composing the photo & not getting too close to them to distract them or making them uncomfortable thus shifting away from me. i have tried shooting dog moving across on few times only since i find their behaviour difficult to predict for good shoots of facial expression, 70% of the time i shoot with them sitting or lying down, 20% standing and 10% running toward me so that i can get their facial expression.

Get a D7000 or D700 from JB. Much more cheaper!

Hi All,

Have been lurking around this forum for close to 6 years with not a single post. :)
I was attracted to this forum when I 1st saw some really nice photos taken with a dslr.

Recently I am thinking to invest in a Nikon DSLR as I travel about 3 times a year and somehow, I always ended up with dissapointing photos with my P&S cam.
I also have 2 dogs who are my 1st piority in life and a P&S is just not fast enough to capture them most of the time.
Will it be a waste if I just use my DSLR for travelling, dogs and food?

I also have friends who keep telling me to just get a semi pro instead.
As I'm female, I have also encountered guys who tell me "don't waste moolah on a dslr since most girls he know just uses auto on a DSLR which is dumb."

I have seen alot of fantastic photos on this forum and it seems like most of them are shot with manual settings so I do understand that I have alot to learn and readup on before getting quality photos.

Would like to just get some advice, I have never used a semi pro or DSLR before, I can't gurentee that this is a hobby that I will devote my life to...BUT because I have nv tried, I won't know. Who knows I may just fall in love with it?

Should I go ahead and get a dslr?

Have been reading up and was thinking of a D3100 to start off..but the more I read, the more I lean towards a D5100.

If I were to get a dslr, would a d3100 be better for a complete noob or just go ahead with a d5100?

Also, I'm going for a Europe trip end of this month, kinda worried that I won't be able to learn e basics by then and end up facing some complications with the camera then.

ps: why nikon? Am not sure, but something just pulls me to choose nikon and not canon. =)

And yes, before I get flamed, I did my do my homework and read through the newbie section stickies, including the whole d3100 and d5100 thread. ;p

I was ever in your shoes, I got myself a d3100 to try out and I never looked back ever since.

It's true on the part where many girls just use DSLR in auto mode, which a quite a waste of good equipment.

Read up, practice when you get the chance, you'll learn to love twiddling with the knobs, dials and buttons to get that "perfect picture".

Hope my noobish advise helps!

Hi ts,
I own a canon G10 for almost 3yrs and regretted it, as it cost me 3yrs of lousy photos quality!

I bought a d7000, sold it after 3 months due to its weight and feel. Instead I bite the bullet and dive into full frame.... Now I own a d700 plus 24-70, and I love most of the pic which I took, compared to those days with pns

Every pic produce by a dslr is so much superior than those taken by a pns, or phone.
They are heavy and bulky for a reason.... Trust me.

If you go to instagram website you will see excellent photos taken by people with iPhone.

I agree you do get more quality and it's much faster, but compositing your final image is the most important if you want to wow the crowd.

Agrees!

A lot of time, i could take better picture with iphone rather than D70s. I spend more time in photo composition rather than figuring out the right exposure and shutter speed. I have bought Fuji X100 as my carry around camera for simplicity.

TS, what makes DSLR different from P&S is the creative control. What is lacking in DSLR below D90 is the number of control on hand. There is no separate control for WB, ISO & etc. I moved into digital age directly from film-based SLR w/o any research at all. Even though it is a steep curve, i have learn a lot along the journey.

For travelling, it is heavy to carry around DSLR especially long zoom. But u will nvr regret it. For my overseas cycling trip, i strap my D70s with 18-105 lens on the handlebbar.
