Should i buy Canon 17-55 f2.8

the phrase 'upgrading to FF in future', to me, is seriously overrated.

how future is the future? 1 day? 2 weeks? 3 months? 4 years? or is it even gonna materialise?

if you have a definite answer to this question, i guess your choice should be pretty clear.

you just have to remember, you are taking photos NOW, not in the future.

best answer if there ever was one.

Honestly, I have plans to upgrade to full frame but I never once did regret getting my crop-only lenses. Besides helping me to capture the moment I want, the IQ is also astounding.

i have plans to upgrade to full frame too, but am still using 17-55/2.8. i don't typically shoot beyond 55mm very often. but if i do, usually there's enough time for me to take the lens off and switch to my tele-zoom.

king of crop. what else can we all say? :) that was the first lens I ever had and i think if you are looking at that focal range for crop bodies, accept no substitutes for IQ.

some pictures to show the bokeh and IQ. all shot at f2.8 by an amatuer (me!)

on a serious note, the 17-55 bokeh isn't really that good.

but it shines in sharpness, CA control and the lightning fast USM.

found the bokeh to be quite ok to me, but maybe because i have not tried lenses which produces nicer ones. but totally agree on the other points you mentioned. :)

Cheers!

I am thinking of getting this lens also, what about another all purpose L lens 24-70mm f2.8. Well, landscape might not be as wide as 17-50mm.

I am a crop sensor user Canon 7D

Well.. The 24-70 is more of a all purpose/general zoom for Full frame. For crop sensor..it can be alittle tight. And if you can wait..wait for the Version II. Its coming. Nonetheless, They are already very good lenses.

For a general purpose walk around sharp lens, is 17-55 better or the 15-85?
I know 17-55 gives you a constant F2.8 whilst 15-85 has a variable F3.5-5.6 but provides a longer reach.

Agree on the lightning fast USM... first time i use it... it focus so fast I thought it was faulty.... haaa.....

Put other tech stuff aside. Ask back yourself. F2.8 is more handy or longer reach is more handy for your need.

Hi everyone need you advise I am using canon 1000d and I have one Kit 18-55 f 3.5 -5.6 , canon 50 mm f 2.8 and Speedlite 580EX II ..
I want to buy one general purpose lens which can be used to click better candid pictures in particular. At this moment canon 17-55 with constant 2.8 is in my mind.
Appreciate ur valuable advise/comment on this and other lens

Thanks in advance
Sid

I've almost bought that lens to put on my 60D. For your purpose, it will be perfect to replace your kit lens and your 50mm.

My issue with the 17-55mm is that the bokeh is not so good for portraits or shooting items which the background is blurred, because it only has 7 blades. I ended up buying the 24-70mm 2.8f which has 8 blades.

The bokeh from the 24-70mm is super super smooth! It allows my 60D to produce an almost full-frame look.

the answer is yes if u r looking for a good quality zoom lens for a crop frame camera.. u won't regret to have one..

I liked both, so i got both. It depends on what you want. Range or constant aperture.

i would suggest to go for L lens, 24-70mm f/2.8

Why L lens if 17-55 serve you better and you do not require weather seal ?

I personally am using the 100mm f/2.8 non-L.... cos when I buy that time, it did not have L version yet.....

If you have the budget, you can consider the 100mmL for the IS..... if not, in term of image quality alone... the 100mm non-L is not too shabby either... so it depends on your budget, and if L is important to you or not......... :)

Both 100mm macro is Great lens!!!!

Actually, I think you should buy the Canon 18-200 instead for general purpose lens :)
