Should I Buy a Canon 7D??

Just go for 7D since ur key interest in photography is sports.. but like what many others had pointed out.. its an endless journey in pursuing the latest or best equipment.. though it might seem as a overkill for u to leapfrog to the best in the mkt right nw. But if u think u will go a long way and are dead serious in upgrading your technical skills in photography, optimizing the usage of the cam, i dun see why not.. but do keep ur options open and see a bigger picture and set aside cash for other stuff like lens and accessories. bottom line being do not spurlge on bodies and scrimp on other impt stuf like lenses.

For me i still stick by whats serve me well.. I being using my D90 (my 2nd one) for close to 16 mths and my d700 is coming close to a year.. Both exceed my expecatations and i must say i m very happy with what i have and not moved one bit by rumors of replacement coming up for these two models (as their life cycles are up soon, which is the typical 2 year for Nikon).. So the best is not neccessarily good, is what u know what to do with it that makes it good

dude, before you start bombing me, please read properly, i said tt i will still be using my 500d with the 75-300 lens to try out and start up these kinda lens just to start learning.

Anyway, back to the facts. You state that you intend to buy the 75-300 (for using on 500D for now) and you intend to get the 7D (see thread title). I'm putting both intentions together and come to the situation: 75-300 on 7D. (Unless you want to donate the lens to your brother when returning the 500D.) My opinion stays and many threads about 75-300 show the same picture: skip it.

TS, ultimately the 7D is a great camera. If you've done your research, and the price and features are what you want, go ahead to buy and don't regret...!

We are all concerned for our fellow newbie CSers, not wanting them to 'waste' money unknowingly. Often I have seen people buy cameras that are too heavy and/or complicated for them, and so they get depressed and give up photography. It's not a nice thing to happen.

Thanks , yah the 7d is like twice as heavy as the 500d, i'm presuming when u say heavy its a physical term and nt a metaphor

yes... heavy as in the physical weight....
not 'heavy heart' kind of 'heavy'....

no point to buy the best camera in the world if it's so heavy that you don't bring with you to shoot the shots that you would otherwise take.

i also got a 7D as my first DSLR though i have all along been using diff DSLRs, just that they dun belong to me.

imo, it's ok if you cant max out the camera function now, in the future you will start to find these 'extra' functions useful. if you get another 500D/550D, chances are you have already mastered most of the functions and very soon you will out grow the camera. but with a 7D it will be diff i guess.

these are some aspects of the camera which i really appreciate alot, esp the 100% VF. it's just diff from the rebels i used before. when i first picked up the 7D at vivo and looked thru the VF, i knew i wanted it becos i used my cousin D300 before and i totally dig it's 100% VF. the ergonomics is also far superior then the rest of canon's APS-C DSLR. was considering the 50D also but decided to bite the bullet and got the 7D.

my 2 cents.

500D's VF is 95%, meaning what you see in the VF only covers 95% of the actual scene.

well it will take awhile more and some more research before i actually confirm to buy, I'm still a student so money wise i need to be very sure what i buy, a mistake would really set me back a long way

but yah need more research may be see a 7d upclose or if possible, renting a 7d

I will be visiting villages as well as mountains and scenic areas with wide open spaces. i was thinking of renting the Canon 10-22 mm f3.5-4.5 USM wide angle lens .... any suggestions?

I had the 10-22 mounted to my 500D 95% of the time when I was in Alishan back in April. Worked well for me.

Other UWAs you might want to check out could be the Tokina 11-16 or Sigma 10-20. Just a couple of suggestions.

couple of days ago, like you, i was looking into getting the 7D for my leisure use. thot of getting a good camera, sign up for some courses etc and take it as a part time hobby again. the last time i had my first SLR was some 20 years ago. i had a DSLR prob 5 years back, got it 2nd hand, but use it mainly for my site works.

after some readings recently, seems that 5DmkII provide better quality pictures (say skill wise being equal) and that as other seniors here have mentioned, its a FF, wide angles etc.

both i believe shoot great HD movie too.

price wise, 5dmkII is slightly above 1k over the 7D. as budget is not a constraint i am about to get the 5dmkII. advises from friends also points me to get this.

each camera has its pros and cons. so when you compare, list out what suits u the most base on your budget constraints if you intended to own a camera to grow with.

i understand your posts on getting á good camera where you can learn and grow with it for many years to come. Same here with me, i m not a keen photographer, just hopeing to pick up this hobby again and i will be investing in this 5DmkII to explore, learn and to grow with it for this few years to come.

there are courses here for beginners, where i will be signing up for. its not expensive but i think its a good place to start with. perhaps you could attend 1 of this course and learn from there. i believe at the end of the course, you would probably knows the type of camera you should be looking into.
