Shooting with Flash

Previously I used an x100 with yongnuo YN560 and RF603 radio trigger, worked very well thanks to AF. However the YN trigger doesn't work with my M8 so I got some no brand china ones that works.

It's quite hard to focus and handhold the flash off camera when shooting at larger apertures, a lot of hand swapping. Sometimes indoors I use the flash on camera but bounced, a lot more convenient than holding but the look is more boring.

lol

The whole idea of using the flash is to stop down?

Say 35mm at F8 with flash power, the zone focusing technique, you wouldnt need to touch the focusing ring the entire night.
no point using flash when you are shooting wide open.

if you're shooting flash with your precious M8/M9, you might want to check the trigger voltage of the older manual flashes.. read some older ones are so high it could fry your digital Ms.

otherwise, I'll go with the smallest most powerful flash I can find, with a low trigger voltage that wouldn't fry a digital M, and I settled for the nikon sb-30 which fulfills these requirements..

just my 2 cents..

I disagree. It depends on your style of shooting really, for some shots I like the DOF to be shallower but still insufficient ambient light. I like to shoot 5.6 and larger. Sometimes in bright light I still need some fill flash too. Using flash doesn't always mean using small aperture! I use flash often also with CV 15 indoors, wide open is only f4.

crispy12: you are right but i guess most of us are responding to using flash as intended to the original poster, using flash like bruce gilden for street photography where flash use is for higher DOF... hahahahha

Raytoei: in that case that's completely right... Still haven't dared to try that one!!

so everyone wants to be bruce giden nw???

Hahahaha.. so funny ....hahaha :p

I guess with flash it is easy to illuminate the subject.

Like what Gary said. Using flash at f5.6 with wide angle lens without the need of focusing...an example from an old shot...
