Shooting Toddlers - Problem!

I DO NOT suggest using the built-in flash, as it will be too harsh. Use an external flash and bounce it off the ceiling.

Actually, Rashkae - you are right - the built-in flash will be too harsh with toddlers, especially when close-up. With my kids, it is external flash with bounce card most of the time.

But if no external flash, can try diffuser over the built-in. I haven't tried this, but think it should soften the lighting on the face.

ya...the kit len is prefectly fine...

Yes, a diffuser works wonders. But shooting with natural light brings out something else. It's that softness of light that is really nice. I dunno, maybe I'm a softie.

All u guys dont throw poison, his lens is perfectly fine lah...:bsmilie:

Just push up your ISO, ensure that your shutter speed hits 1/125 or higher.

Sssshhhh, dun tell him mah... fuel the economy... but seriously, having a prime lens helps a lot. I have the 18-200 but it's a hassle.

You want speed when shooting little ones cuz sometimes, there are really nice moments to shoot. My D70s is with the 50mm most of the time at home cuz I need it ready instantly. Not much time to fiddle with much settings cuz the moments are fleeting.

Agree with the natural light thingy...my 50mm is also always stuck to my 400D, which is now a spare that sits around at home, ever ready to pick up and shoot anytime I desire.

As for the zoom, other than the "fast" lens, it prefer prime over zoom because I have one thing less to do (i.e. zoom) when shooting. Unless one stays in a palace, the zoom feature is not terribly essential. Stepping forward or back 1-2 steps is often enough.

A flash bounced off the ceiling is quite indispensible for me when i'm taking my almost-hyperactive 2yr-old nephew indoors. Would use a prime when there's enough light pouring through the windows though. 200mm produces rather decent results

becareful, once u on all fluorescent lightings in your house and u shoot anything faster than 1/125 u will hv green cast on your photos.
