is there such thing as prime len for 10mm only ? i.e non-fisheye.

For prime lens (fixed focal length), the widest you can go is only 14 mm.
14 mm is the limitation of Ultra Wide Angle lens in Full Frame Body :

Sigma 14mm f2.8 EX Aspherical

Nikon 14mm f/2.8D ED AF

Tamron SP AF14MM F/2.8 Aspherical (IF)

Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM

For Canon and Nikon lens, you can find easily in the market.
For Tamron and Sigma, I am not so sure. Rarely see this lens in Singapore.

My friend said that Nikon 10-24 is worse comparing with the old version, 12-24. Also Nikon lens price is the almost expensive.

wah... okok.... how about the tokina 11-16mm F2.8, how come u r not comparing this lens vs the rest?

is the 1mm over the 10mm really v big difference?

and the tokina has a constant F2.8...

would it be better?

in DX, 1 mm different is significant, sometimes you can't move backward any further because of wall or other people

1 mm x 1.6 factor = 2 mm

For 10 mm lens, based on the pooling, the new Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 looks sweet !

hmm... so if u r not consider 11-16 f2.8 is due to the price?

That's because of the focal length, not the price.

10 - 20 is the ideal range for UWA
10mm = for landscape (acceptable barrel distortion)
20mm = for portrait (distortion not visible)

But what can you achieve by 11 - 16 ?
11mm = for landscape (lots of barrel distortion)
16mm = still landscape (still have barrel distortion)

How about 12 - 24 ?
12mm x 1.6 factor = 18 mm (not wide enough for people who look for UWA)

i have the sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 and its pretty decent for the price. I do have to fix the distortion at 10mm though, but this comes with the territory. Same thoughts as jeff7id, the distortion at 20mm is not visible. For UWA angle the most impt is whether the lens has the boomz factor for u or not, rent and try them out!

in general, clubsnappers tend to happily blindly insist that whatever they have bought in the end is the best. "oh yes yes i spent a lot of money on it so it is the best." "buy this brand! it is the best! confirm won't regret!" on closer inspection, the person is using that brand. :D

Found a new toy : Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6

Later when I purchased it, I would recommend how good this lens was (because I had spent money for this lens  )

sigma 10-20mm gives a better nudging excellent at the wide end and taking into consideration its weight, size and handling
f/4 seems to be a better choice looking at your poll

Yeah, consider the wide end can reach 10 mm, good distortion control and 2x zoom, this lens (Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6) could be considered in your buying list. ;)

The lens is just announced. I don't think it's commercially available yet.

I believe jeff7id meant that he intended to purchase 1 at a future date.

silly me!!!

Change to a nikon body so you get a crop factor of 1.5x then a 11-16 would fit your range :P
I don't know if that extra reach is that important. It is an F2.8 lens after all. I use the tokina 12 - 24 and at times i feel the lens is restricted by the F4, but at 12mm i could fit practically everything. I mean unless you go out with a tripod or don't shoot at night then the F2.8 is not important.

Agree that for (UWA) ultra wide angle photography, focal length is more important than aperture.

If I shot landscape at night, I would use tripod and shot at f/8, rather than handheld and shot at f/2.8.

DX lens 10-20mm or 10-24mm at widest end :
10mm x 1.5 crop factor = 15 mm
10mm x 1.6 crop factor = 16 mm

DX lens 11-16mm at widest end :
11mm x 1.5 crop factor = 17 mm :(
11mm x 1.6 crop factor = 18 mm :(

FX lens 12-24mm (Sigma) at widest end :
12mm x 1 = 12 mm :D
This is the widest UWA lens (non fishy) for FX

But when Sigma launch DX lens 8-16mm :
8mm x 1.5 crop factor = 12 mm :D
8mm x 1.6 crop factor = 13 mm
