Nothing more sad than this - A xenocrab we nicknamed 'Winky' because it only had one eye.
It lived quite stealthily at around 18-20m deep inside a coral bush. We photographed it there during a Tuesday afternoon dive.
Arriving next morning into secret bay behind a group of prestigeous (LOL) photographers staying at a resort up the coast. At 11m my buddy pointed out this 'Mess' on a spindly bush. On closer inspection we discovered it was unmistakably 'Winky'.
Like everything else around the guides for this 'group' had torn it from its original home to the shallower depth because the group wanted extended bottom time and never went below 10-12m. As you can see at least one or two legs have been pulled off; one hanging from the much longer tenticle of the original whip coral.

Disgraceful behaviour promoted by the demands and financial rewards from so called 'Professional photographers'. Who then have the gaul to expect merit and accolades for their shots... Yes, it stinks :( That's why they keep going to this one operation in Anilao.

:( Yes, it stinks. Really stinks. So called "professional"! :nono:

scumbags.. may they burn in hell.. :)

Who were these so called "professionals", let's out them, not only here, but with some of the underwater magazines likely to use their photos...

i condemn such activity

im speechless. =(

i doubt they'll get any usable shots from this..i mean, who wants to see a picture of a crippled xenocrab? what a waste.

unless they use it for a story about survival in the depths? i'll keep a lookout for a picture like this and shame them if it ever gets published...

thanks for bringing this to our attention!

This is not the first time I've bad mouth these PROs cos I've seen many such behaviours and they really sucks. Most have attitude problem........next time if you see a good photo taken by the PROs, stop and think how they capture the shots..Skill? Right place at the right time? or It was staged at the expense of those cute little sea critters....;(

i've been to anilao, in pangasinan, philippines ryt? or is it bolinao. its great but scared the hell ou of me. its like 50-80m from the shoreline and you are still knee deep, then a sharp ravine to pitch black waters below. first time i saw a nemo in the "wild".

Not from this poor guy but the nudibranchs and frogfish are easily transported and staged.
The funniest time was when a femle in the group lay on the bottom for an hour while they tried to get a small red frogfish to yawn by poking and stroking it... It doesn't matter to them that other folks (Probably better photographers) have paid good money to get there only to find this bunch of *******s hogging all the shots

Winky the evening before

i'd go and give them a faceful of sand before merrily swimming away! and then say "oops, sorry it's my 7th dive ever..."

Suxs..... just suxs.... :thumbsd::thumbsd::sticktong

These so called "pro's" need to be outed, then as a community we need to avoid subscribing and buying all magazines and books that use such images.

Also why not mention the dive resort/operator that the group of "pro's" were with so we can all avoid that business and send them the message that such business practices while it might attract some attention and money from a select few will hurt their bottom line more.

Without actually mentioning who it was, and who with there is little we can do to stop it, so I say please tell us.

thats pretty cruel... sucks for the little guy...

should evolve him so he gets venemous tentacles or somethin... teach the suckers a lesson...

Luckily most crab could re-grow their lose limb.... ;)

my Good Friday trip in Anilao as well was totally interesting.... diving at Daryl Laut, saw this "pro" photographer, all rigged up went to a rock along the sandy slope, took out a small bottle from his bcd, and "released" the subject -- a boxer shrimp :D:D:D funny how some pros fool readers of their great pictures when they fool nobody but themselves ;)

Actually if you know the behaviour and habitat of boxer crabs, there are only found by flipping countless rocks and most pics you have of them are those of 'captive' crabs or one that have been moved out of it's habitat.
