It's also a fact that almost all camera lenses represent a trade off between optical performance and build quality versus price, as lens manufacturers build their product not to excel but to offer a reasonable performance level for a given market price.

There have been a handful of lenses made over the years that were no genuine no compromise designs where the manufacturer pulled out all the stops and built optics of superlative quality. Such lenses are almost always horrifically expensive, special order units from their respective manufacturers.
