Will you buy the 100-400 IS USM lens if you struck grand prize in TOTO today?

Nice shot. Don't underestimate your shots.

Agreed for bird watching, versatility is important, especially if you can't predict how far the bird will be sometimes.

Which 400mm is your friend using? F2.8/F4?

Thanks Kenneth for your kind words. I would love to see kf there without to many dead branches :).
He is using 5.6L (i see a great improvement in his pictures).

At least 600 F4 if I strike toto grand price.

Hey, I rented a 100-400mm lens from Desmond(Lowest rental service in town;)) and its awesome! Except that I forgot to bring my tripod that day, so when I reached home my hand was like coconut jelly...

Anyway, share some of your wonderful experiences with that bazooka, I will start the ball rolling...

All pics were taken @ East Coast park & Changi Beach area.

On crop, the 100-400 is pretty neck and neck with the 400 5.6 except at the corners.

The FREE web host is very unpredictable... 1 day it can open the next day cannot.. Still looking for a more permanent solution.

If i am going to buy 100-400 vs 400, i would use these site for reference only and rent both lens to make my own decision.
Like i said earlier, i stress on versatility. At this moment i am holding prime lens but as some time down the road i will add zoom in my collection.

Bro want to support you, but my setup is so heavy and you wrote want to bicycle (cannot hang on back all the time :().
I was planning to do plane spotting but i think i can only meet you guys.
How heavy is your setup? I am only bringing a 50mm f1.4 USM, a 100-400mm and my 400D. What's your setup?

Yes, it's only for reference. For my needs, I chose the 100-400 as it was more versatile. The AF is slower on the 100-400 versus the 3 primes but I'm ok with that.

My setup weight about 12 kilo .

I imagine you're built like a tank.:bsmilie:

I've a few questions about bird watching in SG:

1) where do you guys go to shoot birds?
2) have you considered using mirror lenses? eg. Tamron 500mm f8, or Sigma 600mm f8?

I am building my right shoulder :bsmilie:.

1- I am still exploring.
2- Instead of mirror i will try normal lens, Mirror lens has circle in bokeh (and i don't think IQ will be same as normal lens, but again i never tried one so cannot be very confident with my answer).

Mirror lens for birds, it is super challenging. Unless they don't move. Once they start walking around, you can almost give up shooting them

I know it will be challenging. Care to share your experience with the SY 500mm? Is this lens good?

Share some shot taken with 100 - 400mm
