Very nice low contrast tone. Did you do any post processing? You used Canon 50mm f1.2 LTM for this shot?

Thanks! Yes, this was shot with the Canon f1.2 LTM. There was just some very slight cropping involved and in fact, I lifted the exposure a little to bring out more details. The low contrast was caused largely by the fact that the spotlight on the dancer was actually blue stage lights.

Here is the text on the banner, copied from the 100% crop...

Based on the words of the Buddha as recorded in a text called "The Ullambana Sutra"

More than 2,500 years ago, one of the main disciples of the Buddha called Mahamaudgaiyayana achieved liberation from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth and became an Arhat. He had special realisations and was able to see into the past lives of himself and others.

Mahamaudgaiyayana wised to repay his parents kindness in raising him and was heartbroken when he saw his mother's form as a hungry ghost in a cold dark and smelly hell. She has an unusually small neck and head a very small mouth and her skim was painfully tight and dry all over her bloated body. He was a very filial son and wished to free his deceased mother from suffering. He filled a bowl with food and offered it to her. But as she took the bowl and grabbed a fistful of food, it turned into burning coals even before she could eat it and was burnt instead.

Mahamaudgaiyayana was grief stricken at his inability to help her. He did not understand why his mother was in her present state and asked the Buddha for help. The Buddha responded that during her life, Mahamaudgaiyayana's mother had slandered the Buddha and Sangha (community of monks and nuns), did not believe in reincarnation and was a greedy and bad-tempered person. Her negative behavior and thoughts had created the cause for her to be reborn as a hungry ghost.

The Buddha told him that even though Mahamaudgaiyayana had achieved powerful realisation he still could not save his mother because her negative karma was too serious. The Buddha told him that only the power of the sahgha could save his mother.

Mahamaudgaiyayana was instructed to make offerings to the Triple Gem (Buddha Dharma and Sangha) on the 15th day of the 7th Lunar Month as this was the day when monks and nuns completed their season meditation retreat. The meat ... mulated from making these offerings could then be dedicated to Mahamaudgaiyayana's mother to free her from her misery.

The Buddha then told Mahamaudgaiyayana that future disciples of the Buddha should also make Ullambana offerings of food, incense, candles and other offerings to holy beings and objects on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. The merit they accumulate from this practice will remove the suffering of their parents of the life and also their parents of seven previous lives.

Mahamaudgaiyayana did as the Buddha taught and his month was immediately liberated from her suffering as hungry ghost.

Some shots from Australia, Melbourne and around... Shot on my Bessa R3A on Porta 160/400VC and a few on Fuji Superia 200 when I ran out of film..

Got my new 15mm from Chiif, wow, its a really fun lens to use! Only problem was I kept getting my fingers in the frame unknowingly!
