In Australia, The Age is quite well known for it's lack of balance, and for sensationalizing their views. This is especially true when it comes to Sg. You should see what they say about spitting on the footpath, or peeing in the lift.

The point of sensationalising news is pretty ridiculous to a point where they literally think there are spies and police everywhere ready to pounce on the citizens at a very minor infraction. :bsmilie:

There is no such thing as 100% objective reporting. People understand that.

Papers undoubtedly reflect the biases of their owners and editors. However, there is a choice in countries with free press. Eg in UK, there are papers which are more pro-Labour, there are papers pro-Tory, pro-Liberal Democrats, etc. There are of course also papers which are only concerned with the size of the tits of the woman on the cover.

You can choose which paper to read. More importantly, you can see what the other side says and feels.

In a country where the papers are just mouthpieces of the govt, there is no such choice.

That's the difference.

Most importantly, the serious papers-- papers like the Guardian or the Independent-- guard their reputation jealously of their status. Thus they are very careful to separate news from opinion, and when they write op-eds, they do so seriously, passionately and thoughtfully, and they pull no punches when they believe the govt is wrong.

That's the other difference.

Ah. But there is the internet Which to a certain extent (many will argue this) is not regulated in SG.

Anyway you have a point. It is really interesting to note the differences between the press in different countries. For example, I have noticed that The Jakarta Post (one of the few or should I say only, english paper here in Indonesia) regularly slams the government and its policies. But yet, some other papers are pro-Govt.

Unfortunately the Internet's reach doesn't get all the relevant people, ie voting public in Singapore. Even for those of us who are hooked on the Internet, there are many articles we have not read.

Sure it does not. As wired-up as SG may be, not everybody uses the internet as you have mentioned. But those that do, many are also apathetic to the political scene. So... actually free press or no free press, it boils down to the sentiments of the general public. i.e. they don't care.

One can change the other, ie an exciting press will fire up people's passions. Which is exactly what those in power are afraid of.

I read with interest how we have certain people within this forum who enjoy nothing better than to participate in threads that is related to governance as well as politics.

I have stressed this before and will do so again.

PS: Waileong, you must think that making remarks such as "wonderful government/wonderful moderator" might up your anti-establishment cred but I must say that we do not really care much for your opinions. As above, CS has made their stand very clear from the get go. Should you require a detailed explanation, kindly refer to the T&C of this forum.
