If you are not familiar with the camera or don't want to think too much about it, just use the auto mode.
You can review the shot and use exposure compensation to get exposure right.
However, do note that you will loose creative control and at times image quality of the image if you do so (ie. do DOF control; not sharp enough; not enough DOF)
