seriously canon 60d or GH2?

I understand everyone most prolly see this kind of thread around everywhere on the net... But seriously, I need some help man.... I wanna shoot video with it... So far, I am leaning towards GH2... But there are just some many qns man....

I am just starting out as a dslr video shooter, cos i haf oways used camcorder, like tm700 but would want to shoot some good quality shallow depth video... But I will oso use it to shoot great depth of field too...

For GH2, let's say like if i get a adaptor of canon lens (because my friends are canon users), will the quality of lens match up to a 60d with the same lens? And also, I heard about the PAL version not having 25p, omg, will firmwire fix it?

GH2 does 25p in 720p mode.
60d has a slightly larger sensor than GH2. The crop factor for the 60d and GH2 are 1.5x and 2X respectively. So there are probably more wideangle lens options for the 60d. Ergonomically, the GH2 has an advantage: it has touch screen autofocusing, an electronic viewfinder and is much lighter to carry. Micro4/3 lenses are very much lighter than APS-C glass. In fact,so small, sometimes, it's impossible to gear it for a follow-focus.
Generally, micro4/3 are more expensive then canon lenses and yet look cheaply constructed.
But GH2 allows you to record full 1080i HD video (no audio) via HDMI its output. But 60d allows only 480i through its HDMI.

It is impossible to listen to the actual audio while recording on the GH2 although there is a VU levels indicator.

If you already own Canon lenses, go with the 60d. But if you are starting from scratch and have a deep pocket for micro4/3 lenses and want to be unobtrusive in your shooting, GH2 is the way to go.

Lots of samples online showing that GH2 somewhat produces richer and sharper videos (even against 7d & 5d)... But i suspect that they were using zoom lens and didn't put on sharp lens like 14mm or 24mm prime L lenses to compare. Another problem is the MTS files from panasonic which are problematic in editing so everything must be converted.
Canon's h264 is fine using imovie, etc. Only that FCP has to continuously uncompress the h264 during editing which causes lag.

I am using GH2 and have no problem editing in native AVCHD/mts files.
I edit using Sony Vegas in an old Intel Quad core pc running 32bit WinXP with 4 GB memory.

It's good to have 25p but is not a Blu-ray standard. I shoot in 24p and I like the look.
One features of the GH2 I love is the Extra Tele Conversion aka ETC.

Take a look at this video I shot using the GH2 with 20mm pancake lens and ETC on @ 1.30.

It's like having a "2 lens in 1".

If you've Canon lens, go with 60D.

Cheers!

No lah, never work with Universal Studio or any large production firms before.
Only shoot construction progress on Universal Studio.

A prosumer learning to be a professional.

Woah, the video is amazing... Awesome... Okay, just to let u guys know, I am just starting wif dslrs, so no lens as of now, but will be keen to use some of my friends' canon lens...

Also, I would most prolly be using it to shoot on the go kind of stuffs, handheld, so in tis case, 60d or gh2? So far, i seen the gh2's handhelds kind of shaky or like abit unsmooth.

Have anyone of you used the GH2 with canon adaptor with canon lens? Hows the quality? Better than the lens being mounted on 60d?

And also, is the kit lens bad for Gh2?

And if i am really getting gh2, shld i get the 14-42mm or 14-140? Or shld i get 14-42 and get the pancake? Cos my budget is ard 2k...

Sorry for the amout of qns, and THANKS FOR THE REPLIES!

Actually it really depends on what kind of look you want. For myself, I find the kit lenses a bit too sharp.
So i just got a couple of old minolta md lenses and canon fd. Pricewise, you can be sure you can get a couple of lenses
for a good price

oh ya n just to ask ar, for the audio, u say i cant monitor as in u cannot plug in headphones to hear the sound? n oso if i haf a zoom h4n, can i hook it up?

oh okay thanks man. but sorry i tink i wasnt clear abt my budget, i meant 2k wif the camera n lens. sorry abt the miscommunication. i was tinking abt gettng a cheap but gd shallow depth of field lens n oso a zoom lens that is good enuff to deliver a good wide shot n telephoto shot. shld i use the kit lens?

GH2 is sold with either the 14-45 or 14-140 kit lens. Neither are very fast; f4 wide-open. Depth-of-field depends on the aperture and the focal length. so if you want extremely shallow DOF, you want to shoot with faster prime lenses. But micro4/3 AF primes are very limited: Pany's 14mm f2.5 ; 20mm f1.7; 8mm f3.5 (fisheye);LEICA DG MACRO-ELMARIT 45 mm F2.8.

I prefer to focus manually and use fast Nikon AI primes with a voightlander adapter. With adapters, GH2 has many options in the standard-telephoto range. You can even use C-mount lenses for close-circuit cameras!

If you are buying the GH2, get the 14-140 package (good for run and gun) and get a canon adapter.

For audio, you can split the phone-out jack of your Zoom: one for headphones and one directly into the 2.5mm (Yes NOT 3.5mm) stereo input of the GH2. Monitoring is upstream but still better than nothing. If you are using shotguns / wireless, split the signal at source, one for the Zoom and the other for the GH2. Monitor from the Zoom.

The idea is: Zoom recording should be your primary recording. The GH2 synched audio is a bonus / backup. If it works, great! If not, you still have the pristine, monitored Zoom.

One more thing. You talk about wanting good shallow DOF. The Canon 60d will give you a shallower DOF with the same aperture setting. Don't forget the m43 sensor multiplies the focal range by 2 but also the bokeh is equivalent to x 2 the aperture whereas on the Canon 60d the focal range is x 1.6 and the bokeh is equivalent to x 1.6 the aperture. Therefore the Canon has a shallower dof for the same aperture/focal range setting. E.g the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 is like a 40mm f/3.5 bokeh wise.

I would like to "jump" to this thread as I'm also in a position of choosing a DSLR camera for video shooting.

I'm in a dilemma of choosing the model between 60D or Nikon D7000.

Any advice?

Also, Bampoopictures were saying that 60D allows only 480i through its HDMI? Mind to explain further on this? As what I know, 60D record a Full HD 30p. On top of that, I love its tilt-able LCD Mon which will give a big advantage for video shoot.

Really appreciate on the reply :P

Sorry this is not a direct answer but check out the Canon 600D. It also has the tilt-able screen you love plus it's cheaper!

yea I saw the 600D, but the price is not out yet. And I hope to get the video camera before March :-( Also, need more details on the 600D
