Thanks for the explanation. I guess this is too abstract for me to understand. :)

That's unfortunate, I was hoping my text (if you have read along) can help me portray the feel a little.
It is not about touching the make-up, spraying and tying on one's hair, it is the process if someone's identity being burried over and over again. That itself is the 'drowning' and 'suffocation' I'm speaking of in my text.

Guess this is a little too abstract. Will try again next time to better bring out what I want to portray! :)

- first, bad choice of background design for such lightings u want to achieve, perhaps a plain black background will be better. cos the design seems to distracts when it is partially lit up on the left-right-center for the 3 photos.
- second, #10 i can see a stray of light on the right hair and left shoulder, usually darker photos, our eyes will see lighted portion of the photo first. So where is the subject and where you want our eyes to see? #11 the face is light up more then #10-#12, #12 i see alot of background design then your human subject and fish bowl , to sum up, #10 and #12 i dun see any focus point except the hair and shoulder.

so like i say, if #10-12 is not low key that u are doing, then i dunno what u trying to do, cos its neither here or there for me.

the reason why i say go for b/w is that u will only have 2 colors to play with and u can adjust the tonality and intensity of black or white color so that these 3 photos look better then now, and your background design will not interfere much with the viewer's eyes.

just my views.

i did try to go for low key initially but it give a heavy mood instead of wat i wanted, so i change the lighting ratio to be "not" low key

Maybe it not to ur preference  The background is choosen becos it is messy, a way to show the indecisiveness, a single color will sway the mood to much to 1 side. I am happy that the hair and shoulder catches ur attention becos that is wat i wanted. They are lit up the way u said to "frame" up the fish bowl. lighting is also remove from the fish bowl when taking the photos becos what i wana show should be found but not show directly. Will PP them to fit the theme better.

Overall I hope that it can give user the uneasy, indecisivenes and lacking feel. To show a girl trying to give up on a feelings.

becos of the high contrast of the background compare to subject, it will be even worst if it is convert this is convert to B/W according to ur agument :)

Thanks for your view, will refine more on this idea.

Overall, job well done.
In photography, there are no right or wrong and Rules are meant to be broken.
As long as you are happy with the result, no one can tell you right or wrong. Unless you are pay to do the job. The boss will have the say. Otherwise :dunno:

well, if u dun mind, i would like to convert your photos into b/w to show u what b/w can enhance what u trying to do when i get home tonight. btw b/w is not simply stripping off the colors, i will adjust the black when it is required and white when its required.

anyway, the lighting in your color photo is not good enough to portray human moods (cos the model hair is too tidy already, when someone feels messed up, u cannot be that tidy right?), that's when b/w photo helps. and b/w low key photo tells a lot on human moods. Here's some examples:
http://www.google.com.sg/images?hl=...s&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

in your photos, your model face is almost totally blacked out. i cannot see any mood that u are portraying. Again, using black and white will reveal the lit up portion of the model face against the darkened area of the model face, there is some contrast which explains a mood more effectively.

more right doesn't means right and more wrong doesn't means wrong. rules are meant to be broken but doesn't means you broken the rules you are right and doing correctly, it is how u broken the rules to make it right which is why there is rules in the first place.

Althought i am no expert on b/w but I understand the basic of b/w well. Feel free to try

I black out the face on purpose. I wish to acheive it if without any facial expression at all if possible. The hair and body is juz a frame as explain before. I am a big fan of low key light and techically I am have no difficulties recreating the low keys light photos sample at all.

Althought this maybe my first try on studio, I had been using more than 3 strobes for shoots for a while now. It is tougher to black out the face selectively than to acheive simple low key lights. I just wana try one something different and I dun expect to get it right on first try. Thanks for for view

Agree :D but since this is more like a TFCD session, I took alot more "normal" studio for photos for her :D instead #10-12 are merely for my own interest

pardon my poor PP skills cos still learning how to do PP via lightroom 3

here's my humble try (you may or may not like it):

http://i53.tinypic.com/34osehg.jpg (i decided not to do a b/w for this but added a little color)

http://i56.tinypic.com/14v056d.jpg (b/w)

http://i53.tinypic.com/2hi6o05.jpg (another b/w version)

Note: I do not own copyright to these photos.

Hmmm I think the contrast is pretty over done. Looks a little scary and creepy actually. Especially for 1 and 3

But also through B/W I understand that color is prolly more effective as I can no longer catch my attention on the goldfish now that the colors are removed.
Interesting share though!

Thanks!

it is scary cos the face is purposely blacken out in the first place :p i dun have the original file to work on so dats the best i could do.

the goldfish is never in attention even in color cos its OOF.

in fact all 3 photos, nothing is in attention (no AF point), i guess the AF point is on the face but like AhFoo said, it was blackend out purposely. He is using the light to do a framing but i think it is weak because in color, the colors actually distracts, whilelse in b/w, it can frame out more better (my PP skills is not great but i have done something to give an idea using b/w to bring out the frame in light)

Nah I think the colors vs b/w does have this difference in mood. Not because the face it black out or so IMO.

Color gives me the feel, "nothing really matters now since I can't do anything in this solitude anyway"
B/W gives me the feel, "Saw one more word and my nails are going to rip your eyes right out of the other hand of your skull"

Hahaha but that's just me! I think I think too much liao!

Oh anyway I must mention that even if something is not in focus doesn't mean that it's not an important part of the photo or composition.
Many times e.g in films especially directors give emphasis to something by defocusing it but let viewers try to make it out or feel uncomfortable about the real 'focus'.

I think 2 is fine but 3 especially lost a lot of its power in B/W.

Just sharing my opinion :)

Thanks for the effort but the mood of B/W is really not wat i am looking for. Even if I will wan to do a b/w convertion, the contrast is really too over done till the bkgd is absorbing all the attention from my frame and boring. Also if the hair and shoulder as u mention grap u attention more than anything in the earlier post, it is not distraction.

Dats why i said a plain background is better if b/w conversion. Anyway to each own.

humm... personally i still prefer the color version, b/w just seen more "evil" and i think u over-do it. Mayb contrast is being adjusted too much, become not that natural too. Especially the 1st one, a bit too harsh and rough?
Btw, me still noobs in learning stage =D

it looked evil cos the face is blackend out by Ahfoo/turtlesan as explained. i am not the photographer so i dun have the original file to work on.

else it look something like this:
